PPTV broadcaster James Shortt picks out 4 of the best at Saturday's meeting.

13:30 – GAIRE OS ARD

GAIRE OS ARD is the only filly among the field in this 6-furlong juvenile maiden and gets the vote to win the Curragh opener for Jim Bolger and Kevin Manning. The daughter of Teofilo wasn’t disgraced behind impressive winner Tenebrism on debut at Naas and should improve for the extra-furlong, slightly better ground and recent race experience.

Castle Star is another with experience for Fozzy Stack and was unlucky on debut at Cork, while Glounthaune runs in the colours of Evie Stockwell for Aidan O’Brien. Ger Lyons and Colin Keane team up with Kirsapp on debut, but the fillies’ allowance should be enough to see Gaire Os Ard claim victory in the first at HQ this Saturday.

14:35 – FISCAL RULES

The first of our Group 3 races on the Curragh card, the Gladness Stakes looks an open affair with Lancaster House looking for back to back wins for Aidan O’Brien. The five-year-old beat Speak In Colours last year and returns for a seasonal debut having finished last in the QEII at Ascot last October. FISCAL RULES looks each-way value and should improve for his second-place finish at Cork two-weeks-ago for Jim Bolger and Kevin Manning.

The Coolcullen team won this race with Flight Risk previously and can be rewarded with another success in this race this year. Recent race-fitness and the return to seven-furlongs are positives for a son of Make Believe, who finished fifth in the Irish 2000 Guineas and Irish Derby here at this venue last season. He finally landed his maiden over this trip at Cork last September and I’ve no doubt the Bolger team have not given up hope of securing group success this season.

15:10 – BROOME

It’s extremely hard to side against BROOME in the Alleged Stakes for Aidan O’Brien and Ryan Moore following his impressive victory on return at Naas last month. The son of Australia finished fourth in the Epsom Derby last June before taking a summer break and disappointing on return in the Long-Distance Cup at Ascot last October.

This 10 furlongs is arguably his best trip having won three times at this distance and he clearly stands out on official ratings (115). Like Lope Y Fernandez’s victory in the Heritage Stakes at Leopardstown on Wednesday, this looks another penalty kick for the Ballydoyle team and it would be a surprise if the opposition were good enough to beat the favourite.

16:50 – SAATTY

Blue Planet will be popular for Aidan O’Brien and Ryan Moore following his debut third to Hype at Dundalk last October, but SAATTY looks the value for Kevin Prendergast and Chris Hayes in this 6-furlong maiden. It’s a massive field and luck in running will be crucial but the son of Markaz caught my eye on debut and should go close to victory.

The Shadwell runner travelled extremely well into the race on debut before finishing fourth to Horoscope at this venue over seven furlongs last month. The three-year-old must reverse the form with Valhalla’s Dream but the drop-in trip looks ideal and I’d be disappointed if he’s not placed and among the challengers at the business end of this race.
