Ruby Walsh has named his Wednesday wagers for Day 2 of the Craven Meeting at Newmarket.
Speaking on Paddy Power’s From The Horse’s Mouth podcast, our resident jockey-turned-pundit has picked outhis best bets ahead of a quality afternoon of flat racing.
There is nothing outstanding in this race for me, although CHIL CHIL hasn’t run since on the all-weather at Kempton on October 7. Oisin Murphy takes the ride and Andrew Balding’s horses often can be forward enough at this time of year.
This might be a hopeful pick more than anything else, but TACTICAL was very good early in the season last year. He obviously won the Windsor Castle at Royal Ascot over 5f, so this trip might be a bit of an issue but he definitely shaped really well early doors last year. Maybe 7f might be a bit of a stretch, but if he doesn’t get home then he could come back to 6f somewhere along the way.

I am in the same camp as Frank Hickey, in that I would look to take Global Giant on here. MARIE’S DIAMOND was third in the Queen Anne behind Circus Maximus, and then came up behind Mohaather and Space Blues. You look at those horses and it shows that Marie’s Diamond has been running in really good races. He takes a drop in grade here and is guaranteed to be fit.
I’m sure Godolphin will be hoping they have a 1000 Guineas winner here in Divine Light, who beat Achelois at Newmarket, but the latter went on to finish seventh behind Statement at Newbury. That’s not exactly a massive boost for the form, while Oasis Cave was back in third that day and got absolutely trounced by One Journey next time out. Divine Light could do no more than win, but he only won by half a length on that occasion so you’re thinking ‘where is the improvement from there?’
Sacred has had plenty of chances but I’m with LOVE IS YOU for Roger Charlton and Jason Watson. She ran twice last year, winning at Ascot in September and Newbury in October over 1m7f. She is guaranteed to stay, so even if she lacks some fitness she has stamina.
