This looks a relatively open renewal of the Marathon, but preference is for the Alan King-trained RAINBOW DREAMER, who has made up into a very solid operator on the all-weather. He is yet to race round here, but he isn’t short of speed, so the sharper test shouldn’t be against him, and he was ridden from the front at Kempton last time. Rainbow Dreamer sets the standard on Timeform weight-adjusted ratings and looks the solid choice. Ranch Hand heads the dangers having made a winning return to the Flat last month.
INDIE ANGEL developed into a useful filly last season, winning handicaps at Newmarket and Salisbury before landing a listed event over a mile at this course in October. She proved better than ever that day, and that victory earnt her a place in today’s race. Connections have likely kept her fresh for this since given her ability to go well after a break and the drop down in trip shouldn’t be an issue given her turn of foot. Shimmering Dawn, who wasn’t seen to best effect at Wolverhampton last time, looks the obvious danger.
This looks decidedly open, and slight preference is for SUMMERGHAND, who put up a mighty effort to win the Stewards’ Cup at Goodwood last season off top weight. He wasn’t beaten far in third by Venturous and Aberama Gold at Wolverhampton at the beginning of last month and ran to a similar level when beaten only by an unexposed sort over the same course and distance 12 days later. It is probably best to ignore his run at Doncaster last time, an awkward start causing him to be poorly placed. A wide draw isn’t much of an issue as he will likely be held up and a bold bid is expected in a first-time visor. Irish-raider Harry’s Bar looks interesting under Hollie Doyle.
DILIGENT HARRY attracted plenty of support and looked potentially smart when bolting up on debut at Wolverhampton in January and confirmed that impression when completing a simple task at Kempton the following month. He was again tight in the betting on his handicap debut over course and distance last time and was arguably unlucky not to win, a slow start putting him on the back foot and he was closing with every stride at the line. Diligent Harry remains with all of his potential intact and remains a smart prospect. Mighty Gurkha is a solid operator and looks set to give it his all from the front once more.
BANGKOK beat subsequent Winter Derby winner Forest of Dean into third in a course-and-distance listed event in February, but missed the Winter Derby itself in favour of running on the dirt in the Saudi Cup at King Abdulaziz last time. Admittedly, he ran no sort of race, but he is best not judged too harshly on that, and looks the one to beat again back under these conditions. Bangkok has a bit of class and can prove too strong for Forest of Dean once more.

This is a competitive renewal of the Mile, but strong preference is for KHUZAAM, who has some solid form to his name and looked very good on his first run since undergoing a gelding operation when making a winning return at Chelmsford last month. He broke a run of second-place finishes in good style, arguably proving better than ever, not having a problem with the drop to seven furlongs, and that run should have put him spot on for this. There is a feeling he has an even bigger performance in the locker on a synthetic surface and he should prove hard to beat back up in trip. Mums Tipple rates a big threat after a resurgent victory in listed company at Wolverhampton last time.
Lots in with chances in this apprentices’ handicap. MAGICAL WISH hasn’t been out since before Christmas, but scored over course and distance off a break around this time last year, and is fancied to repeat the feat here from just a 2 lb higher mark. Ayr Harbour is another who lacks a recent run but was better than ever when last seen scoring at Southwell and rates a big threat with the burgeoning Benoit de la Sayette now taking off 7 lb.
