ITV Racing starts on Saturday with this Listed event for older horses over 1m 2f and it’s very hard to get away from GLOBAL GIANT, who really should be good enough to land this with a BHA rating of 113. The all-weather is not an issue and his win in the Listed Steventon Stakes at Newbury in July should be good enough to take this.
ITV get under way at Doncaster with the Listed Doncaster Mile. It won’t be easy for TOP RANK with a 5lbs penalty, but he’s a class act and might be one to catch fresh after he disappointed at the end of last season in Group 2 company. James Tate trains and PJ McDonald has the mount, so I’ll have a few quid on each-way.
Now a competitive handicap over 1m 3f and AL ZARAQAAN is only up 5lbs for a handicap win at Lingfield in December, that might prove very generous indeed. He was fast improving at the time for William Haggas and Richard Kingscote is a decent jockey booking for the top stable. He carries the colours of the late Hamdan al Maktoum.
Now the Lincoln consolation race in the Spring Mile and it’s obviously wide open! MASCAT should have an each-way chance for Rossa Ryan and Ralph Beckett. He’s lightly raced and with just one win to his name and plenty of placed runs, you have to wonder his desire to get the job done. That said a mark of 89 looks workable.
Jumping from Newbury with a handicap hurdle over 2m 3f and MOUNT WINDSOR is on a five-timer for Chris Gordon, but this might be a step too far. That said he’ll be hard to catch under Fergus Gillard even though he’s now on a mark of 140 having started off 105. I’ll have a few quid each-way.
This is the big betting race of the day with the Lincoln Handicap over 1m. I expect a huge run from KING OTTOKAR for Charlie Fellowes and Ben Curtis. A mark of 99 is absolutely fine and he’s got decent form in these types of events.
He was sixth in the Balmoral at Ascot in October and he did really well after a slow start, so he’s got big claims here. There are some lightly raced types open to improvement, but I’ll definitely back him each-way.
Finally, a Grade 2 bumper over an extended 2m 4f and I thought MISTY WHISKY was a little unlucky for this column not to score in the Lanzarote Hurdle at Kempton. While beaten off this mark at Sandown last time, she should be in the mix if running to her Kempton form. Place claims at least for Harry Fry and Lorcan Murtagh who takes off 3lb.
This is the Cammidge Trophy which has Listed status for 6-furlong sprinters. There are some old favourites in here and Brando has the clear ratings edge. At the age of nine, though I will take him on with the youngster JUST FRANK who has just had five races, but has already shown plenty of ability and pace. He might be hard to catch under 8st 9lb for Les Eyre and Lewis Edmunds.
So best of luck and pray for Yeeehaaas. You hear me Paddy?
