The final day of the Cheltenham Festival 2021 features the biggest prize in jump racing – the Cheltenham Gold Cup. Al Boum Photo is seeking to join an elite club of runners including Best Mate and Arkle in landing the Blue Riband three years on the spin.
Willie Mullins’ effective chaser faces a whole host of rivals in 2021 including 2020 RSA Novices’ Chase winner Champ and A Plus Tard from Henry de Bromhead’s red-hot yard.
Al Boum Photo is not the only runner to have crossed the line first in a Cheltenham Gold Cup, with 2018 winner Native River looking to reclaim the prize.
It looks set to be a thrilling renewal to cap off an incredible Festival, which has really captured the imagination. But who are Paddy Power’s elite pundits backing? Let’s find out.
Ruby Walsh: “We are delighted with AL BOUM PHOTO. A Plus Tard looks a bigger danger to him than Champ given the form Henry De Bromhead’s runners are in.”
Mick Fitzgerald: “It’s hard to believe AL BOUM PHOTO is going for his third Gold Cup in-a-row. He has gone down a familiar route with one run at Tramore before a Gold Cup tilt and this year’s race should suit him more as Frodon and Native River will set a strong pace up front.”
Matt Chapman: “We all know Al Boum Photo could win this for a third time, but with drying ground and a visor on I’m backing SANTINI each-way for Nicky Henderson and Aidan Coleman.”
Gina Bryce: “Two time winner of the race Al Boum Photo has proved his versatility in winning back to back Gold Cups in contrasting style and has to be hugely respected in his bid to land a third success. However, another horse who has proven Festival form albeit at a lower level is 2019 handicap chase winner A PLUS TARD who took his form to the next level up in trip this year when winning a very competitive renewal of the Savills Chase in eye catching fashion.”
Frank Hickey: “Golden Miller won the Gold Cup five times, while Arkle and Best Mate both won it 3 times and are in the history books and AL BOUM PHOTO can join them if he can get the business done here.”
Timeform: “NATIVE RIVER arrives at this year’s Cheltenham Festival is great heart, building on his seasonal reappearance run with a superb display of jumping to land the Cotswold Chase at Sandown last month. He relished the conditions and suggesting he is as good as ever.”
