The big man himself has picked out his best bets for Saturday.

13:15 Newbury – Sir Ivan

I always find these races tricky and I usually go for the youngest horse. The youngest here is 10 so I guess that’s why it’s the Veterans Chase. A lot of them might have gone off the boil so I look for one that’s been running consistently. The one I’ve landed on is Sir Ivan. He won over three miles a long time ago. I think he’s worth backing but it isn’t a hugely strong fancy.

13:30 Kelso – My Drogo

I’m pretty strong on My Drogo here. If in doubt, go for a Skelton horse. That’s worked pretty much all season!

13:50 Newbury – Grand Sancy

I’m going with Grand Sancy, trained by Paul Nicholls and this is my NAP of the weekend. He has a great record in this race and he finished third last time. However, there were reports he had a breathing problem and if there’s any stable you want to be in with that then it’s Nicholls. He sorts them out pronto. If you’re going to forgive that run, some of his form is pretty classy. I think that might just be good enough for this race.

14:05 Kelso – Mayo Star

I’m going with Mayo Star in this one. It’s a lightly-raced horse and is pretty talented on its day. Ran over three miles on heavy ground after a big break last time and couldn’t quite get it done. However, it won after another break. The worry here is the amount of breaks throughout the form line so maybe there are injury problems. The shorter trip and better ground might be more forgiving here. I’d say Mayo Star has a chance here.

14:20 Doncaster – Alpha Carinae

I fancy Alpha Carinae, trained by Olly Murphy. Wynn House will be going well in this one but with Richard Johnson riding Alpha Carinae, she will go close. However, Wynn House will be hard to beat here!

14:40 Kelso – Aso

I’m choosing Aso here on the basis that he’s the highest rated runner in the race.

14:55 Doncaster – Zoffee

I’ve gone for Zoffee here, ridden by Richard Johnson once again. He’ll be going against Getaway Trump who will do well here but the Hobbs stable is getting back into form. I’d back Zoffee in this open race.

15:15 Kelso – The Shunter

It’s quite simple here and I’m going for The Shunter. Emmet Mullins sending one over means it’ll be a winner. I love the idea of executing this clever gamble as it’s a lovely little plot for Cheltenham. It could be a little below-the-radar plan for Mullins and The Shunter.

15:30 Doncaster – Beware The Bear

I’m going with Beware The Bear here. I remember him at the Ultimate a couple of years ago and he loved jumping and was staying well. The Grand National is the ultimate aim for Beware The Bear but if he gets going here I think he’ll stay on well towards the end.

15:58 Navan – Epson Du Houx

I like Epson Du Houx, trained by Henry de Bromhead. It was mega impressive before the Dublin Festival then kind of bombed out when it got there. Despite that, I think Epson Du Houx could be hard to beat here.
