Paul Nicholls has won five of the last eight renewals of this race and has Capeland and Grand Sancy here but I fancy Umbrigado in an each way bet. I was liking Umbrigado for the Paddy Power Plate at the Cheltenham Festival but he may not run now since he is taking his place here. Umbrigado is very much unexposed with only 11 career starts but he has shown that there is a big handicap in him at some stage.
He was second at Haydock over hurdles on seasonal reappearance off 139 and won his second chase start at Fontwell in January. He followed that up at Wetherby a couple of weeks ago when winning on his handicap debut over fences off 139 over 2m. He’s up 5lbs but this trip is probably more suitable. He’s got a cracking chance here.
I’m going for Mega Yeats. It’s her second start under Mark Walford – he had a couple of winners this week. Mega Yeats was second to The Glancing Queen in a listed bumper at Cheltenham in late 2018. That was a very useful renewal. She beat Storm Goddess in her hurdles debut and she is now rated 131.
She had two runs last season when seventh in the old Fixed Brush hurdle at Haydock off 134 and was midfield in a strong mares handicap hurdle at Cheltenham off 131. That race produced the winners of the Coral Cup and Martin Pipe at last years festival. She was also an excellent second in a jumpers bumper at Kempton last month. I think she’s got a real chance here.
This looks a very weak renewal and I’m going for Wynn House. She was useful in bumpers and won her first two over hurdles, both on decent ground, over 2m3f at Bangor and 2m5f under a penalty at Ludlow. She was beaten in a Grade 2 at Cheltenham against the geldings in December over 3m but the soft ground may have been unsuitable for her. The good ground here for her is ideal and Alan King remains among the winners.

I fancy Proschema here. He won two jumpers bumpers recently at Newcastle. He was only a 5/1 shot in the Greatwood but the soft ground was probably against him. He was rated 104 on the flat and I think that flat track and decent ground are what he wants. If he gets his conditions here, I think he will win. The penalty will give him a chance of getting into the County Hurdle, where Skelton has a brilliant record in the race (he’s number 69 currently).
The Shunter has been progressive for Emmett Mullins this season after switching from John Clifford. He won a maiden hurdle at Downpatrick in September and followed it up by beating Enjoy D’allen by 18l in a beginners chase at Punchestown and ED is now rated 137.
He won the Greatwood when well backed off 128 and was third at the DRF over fences off a mark of 132 when the saddle slipped. I think he might have won but for that. It looks like Mullins has targeted the bonus here. Win this and avoid any penalty then look ahead to running over fences at Cheltenham, where I would strongly fancy him.

13:50 Newbury – Umbrigado (E/W)
