BALLYBEGG shaped with promise when second to a useful novice on his debut over hurdles at Bangor in December, leaving the impression he would improve further when the emphasis is more on stamina. He confirmed that impression in no uncertain terms when routing his rivals by 18 lengths over two and a half miles at Hereford last month, looking the winner some way out but still impressing with the distance he put between himself and the others. On that performance winning a novice hurdle under a penalty should be a formality and it is interesting that he holds an entry in the Ballymore at the Cheltenham Festival next month.
CHANTRY HOUSE was one of the best novice hurdlers around last season and made a very impressive start over fences at Ascot in November, not always fluent with his jumping, but still stretching clear to score by 26 lengths. Admittedly, he was disappointing and failed to land the odds at Cheltenham last time, seemingly not seeing the trip out on holding ground after shaping better than the winner. Chantry House faces a less-taxing assignment now, though, and is fully expected to get back on the up.
Though he has proved expensive to follow, EMBOLE has shown enough in his two starts since returning from a lay-off to suggest that a race of this nature should be within reach. He represents a bang in-form yard who do well with their runners at this track and figures on a fair mark. The in-form Sawpit Sienna is likely to be in the thick of things once more and she is feared most.
UMBRIGADO was a useful hurdler but, given his physique (tall gelding), his future was always going to be over fences, and he has made an encouraging start. He was well found in the market and shaped well when runner-up to a useful sort who had previous experience over fences on debut at Uttoxeter in December and built on that promise as expected to open his account with the cheekpieces back on at Fontwell last time.
The handicapper has left him on his hurdles mark of 139 for his handicap debut over fences, which could prove lenient, as Umbrigado has the potential to be even better in this sphere. Connections will likely be targeting handicaps at the Cheltenham Festival with him and he seems sure to go well off top weight.

This looks a cracking handicap, but it is hard to side against NIGHTBOATTOCLYRO, who made it two wins from two starts for Samuel Drinkwater with another nice victory at Chepstow last time. He again impressed with the manner in which he travelled on that occasion, making smooth headway from three out and hit the front before jumping the last. He remains lightly raced for his age and rates the type to win more races having been raised 5 lb in the weights.
SIGURD (engaged Carlisle Tuesday) is in terrific form and is worth a chance to complete the hat-trick despite going up a stone for his demolition job at Catterick 45 days ago. He will be the one to beat if turned out quickly, but Leverock Lass, who is on the up, will rank the main danger if the selection doesn’t run.
BRAYHILL landed his last couple of starts in points and could be worth chancing to complete the hat-trick on his Rules debut under the Champion jockey. Pressure Sensitive is an obvious danger on the back of his Bangor success, although the form isn’t really working out.
