Punters with attitudes will be hoping Straitouttacompton can get them off to a flyer in the Southwell’s opener on Sunday. Ivan Furtado’s 5-year-old has been in great form lately, winning four of his last seven races. That tally includes a recent course and distance success 10 days ago when he readily pulled clear of the field in the final furlong under today’s pilot, Sean Levey.
Straitouttacompton’s record over course and distance now reads 1151 and the manner of his most recent victory suggests there is still plenty more under the bonnet and he looks capable of giving this field weight and a beating.
The longest race on the card is the third race, it’s a handicap over 1 mile and 6 furlongs. It looks set to be a fascinating clash between two progressive horses, Mukha Magic and Caribeno. Caribeno defied an 11 lb hike and a long lay off to land a Lingfield handicap back in January. He looks a typical Sir Mark Prescott improver and this small step up in trip should be well within his radar judging by how he stayed on to the line.
The concern is that he is making his debut at Southwell, and it’s not a certainty that he will like this surface. One who will certainly relish the surface is Mukha Magic. Gay Kelleway’s 5-year-old took advantage of a drop in grade to slam the field in a handicap at Southwell five days ago. Mukha Magic travelled beautifully throughout and looks more than capable of defying a 5 lb rise. With proven track form Mukha Magic is the bet.

The penultimate race on the card is a 1 mile handicap for the 3-year-olds, and a chance is taken with Beija Flor. The selection is making her debut for the Stuart Williams yard after recently leaving William Haggas. On her final start for Haggas she was second in a handicap at Chelmsford over today’s trip. Beija Flor was produced late and wide and just failed to track down the winner. It was a run of great promise and Beija Flor is taken to build on that and make her stable debut a winning one.
