Purchased for £100,000 as a four-year-old, BALCO COASTAL finished runner-up to Gentlemansgame on his sole start in points in October, and that form has since worked out well, the winner finishing second to the progressive Gaillard Du Mesnil in a Grade 1 at Leopardstown on Sunday. Balco Coastal has since joined the powerful Nicky Henderson yard and is very much of interest on his Rules debut.
OZZIE MAN makes certain appeal on paper ahead of his Rules debut, closely related to fair hurdler Frankie Rapper, and he was a maiden point winner on his sole start between the flags in December. Gary Moore’s bumper runners have been performing well this year, in fact, Moore saddled four winners from his 11 runners in races of this type in January, and Ozzie Man looks well enough equipped to continue that good run of form.
A fairly useful performer on the Flat from just three starts for Jessica Harrington, CASTEL GANDOLFO was strong in the betting and showed aptitude for hurdling on his first start for Fergal O’Brien’s yard at Musselburgh in November, just bumped by the winner and unable to quicken in the final 100 yards. He ran at least as well when third at Newcastle last time, perhaps just bumping into a couple of better ones, and he is not taken lightly on his bumpers debut, particularly given his previous Flat exploits in Ireland.
FLIC OU VOYOU was a useful dual-winner in bumpers at the beginning of his career, landing back-to-back races in this sphere before contesting the Champion Bumper at the Cheltenham Festival. He failed to get off the mark over hurdles last season but returned with a bang at the beginning of this term, reeling off a hat-trick of victories at Chepstow, Newton Abbot and Wincanton in October and November. He again ran well when second at this venue last time, and he is likely to have a big say here. He is the standard setter and should take all the beating.

JACAMAR has gone from strength to strength over hurdles this season and proved himself better than ever when landing his second race of the campaign at Wincanton in December, producing a career-best effort to win by a neck. He has been progressing really well of late and is taken to continue his upward momentum and make a winning return to this sphere.
ON THE SLOPES did well over fences last season, third in a warm novice handicap on Trial Day at Cheltenham before twice winning at Kempton, improving by the run. He saw his mark rise substantially as a result of those two victories, and he has failed to regain the winning thread in two runs this season, but he is certainly not short on speed, which should prove a huge advantage as he switches from chases to bumpers.
A contender in last season’s Betfair Hurdle at Newbury and Martin Pipe Handicap Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, ECCO is clearly is talented performer and he has done well since having cheekpieces applied this term, awarded victory at Doncaster in December before finishing second at this venue last time. He was a useful Flat performer in Germany earlier in his career and this could prove a good opportunity for him to regain the winning thread.
DIDTHEYLEAVEUOUTTO has failed to complete on each of his last three starts over hurdles – his jumping clearly not an asset – but he was sure to have gone close had he not come to grief at Chepstow in October, moving strongly into contention when coming down three out. The lack of obstacles here should surely play to his advantage and this speed test will also be right up his street. He won two of his three starts in bumpers at the beginning of his career and could be the answer in this card closer.
