12:55 Hoi Polloi
HOI POLLOI ran to a good level when making a winning start under Rules in a bumper at Kempton last season, beating several subsequent winners, and he made a solid start over hurdles when finishing runner-up on his debut at Hereford in November. He was unsurprisingly strong in the betting given how his bumper form had worked out, but was in need of the experience, making novicey mistakes at his hurdles and left behind by a previous winner on the run-in. This doesn’t look the deepest race for the track and Hoi Polloi is expected to go one place better.

13:25 Funambule Sivola
There is plenty of potential on show for this novice handicap chase, but FUNAMBULE SIVOLA has made a bright start over fences and is fancied to record a third win. He looked a completely different model when making a winning start over fences a Wetherby in November, having any amount in hand, but he didn’t seem suited by more patient tactics over a longer trip on his next start at Sandown. The drop back to two miles under a more positive ride did the trick over this course and distance last time, again looking a natural chaser like so many do from this yard. The handicapper has hit him with a 6 lb rise since, but that looks lenient given the impression he has created so far, and there should be even more to come.
14:00 Hamilton’s Fantasy
Nicky Henderson won this race 12 months ago and his HAMILTON’S FANTASY could make it back-to-back wins. She looked a useful prospect when finishing runner-up in a bumper at Ascot that usually always throws up future winners and she looked the part in the paddock too. Hamilton’s Fantasy is bred to do better now sent hurdling up in trip, and it is no secret that Nicky Henderson likes to start his better novices off at Newbury. This looks a good opening for Hamilton’s Fantasy who hails from a family the yard know well.
14:30 Heart Of A Lion
A big-field handicap which features several potential improvers, but the one that stands out in the Alan King-trained HEART OF A LION. He was strong in the betting and looked an above-average recruit when winning a bumper at Southwell last season with plenty in hand. Heart of A Lion hasn’t quite progressed as expected in three starts over hurdles since, but he may have been brought along with handicaps in mind, and he has seemingly been let in lightly from a mark of 108. He will stay further than two miles in time, but he represents an in-form yard, has undergone a wind operation since last seen and has to be high on the shortlist.

15:05 Panic Attack
An interesting mares’ handicap hurdle, but it is hard to resist the allure of PANIC ATTACK, who built on her hurdling debut when getting off the mark at Uttoxeter in October in good style. She disappointed on her handicap debut at Cheltenham afterwards, but connections suggested she probably didn’t appreciate being run back so quickly on that occasion, and she duly proved herself a useful prospect following a longer break when bolting up over course and distance last time. The handicapper has hit her with an 11 lb rise since, but she is clearly a progressive mare and she is fancied to follow up kept to her own sex.
15:35 Onefortheroadtom
ONEFORTHEROADTOM should be sharper following his reappearance at Ascot in November and he could be the answer to this open-looking handicap. He wasn’t disgraced that day, but it was his jumping that let him down, and he should be more competitive here. There was much to like about the way Ouro Branco did the job at Wincanton on Boxing Day and he is feared greatly in his bid to make it four from five in this sphere.
16:05 Broomfield Burg
BROOMFIELD BURG was successful on his sole start between the flags and hails from a stable that has brought many a promising type to this course for their Rules debut, so he’s preferred to Doctor Ken, who arrives on the back of an encouraging second at Market Rasen first time out. Great Heart’Jac, another winning pointer, is another one to consider.
