The opening action at Southwell is a class five, 5f Handicap with two last time out winners, most notably Centurion Song who won over C&D three weeks ago and will look to follow up.
But I am going for RED STRIPES in this race. This horse did manage to win here in the past, albeit last year, but has been placed on three of its last four runs. He was only beaten a length and a half last time out so not disgraced and should run a solid race at a decent price.
This is a class five novice stakes over 1m4f and it’s a tricky race with last time out winner Alpha Theta the one they all need to beat. I fancy TALKISCHEAP, who hasn’t seen a racetrack since February of last year when contesting in a grade three chase at Kempton when unfortunately been pulled up. This horse has run against the likes of Santini and On the Blind Side – who won at the weekend.
Obviously this is only a prep run back for this horse but Alan King’s horses are going well with a 23 per cent strike rate the last two weeks and this horse, having its second run following a wind op, could go well at a decent price.

A small field of runners over 7f and I like PERFECT SWISS, who always runs a decent race. This horse won two starts ago and was beaten favourite last time out when second on that start. Both jockey and trainer would be on a cold stat list as jockey Phil Dennis is 0 from 13 while the trainer Tim Easterby is 0 from 5 runners, so both will need to reverse recent form. I feel Perfect Swiss is the one to do that.
The next race is a 6f Handicap and Marve, the last time out winner, will be fancied again but I think DRIFTWOOD could cause an upset. She was behind Marve 11 days ago when third but has had another run since, second on Sunday only beaten four lengths. She is improving with each run, the trainer Scott Dixon has a 22 per cent strike rate over the past two weeks and the jockey Kieran O Neill boasts a 19 per cent strike rate, so with both going well and at a price this horse should run into the money.
