Not the strongest of races to start with at Southwell but THE BRITISH LION went straight into the tracker on latest performance. Last win came back in 2019 but completely missed the start over C&D last time and ran a super race to finish second – that was his best performance in recent times.
He is obviously a big danger off current mark and Charlie Bennett takes over in the saddle. This race will not take much winning and surely the jockey instructions will be to leave as late as possible. Lets hope he gets up to win.
Class 5 Maiden and PINA COLLADA is a really well-bred filly making her racing debut here. Her connections make her stand out in this race and also the fact that those who have raced have not shown much to date.
She gets the fillies allowance which is always a help and also the fact that Mark Johnston newcomers have a great strike rate on debut. Pina Collada will certainly know her job on debut and is also Johnston’s only runner on the card.

UNLEASH is a lightly-raced 3-year-old who ran his best race to date last time out in a C&D nursery. That was his first run since being gelded and also his first run on this surface so I’m sure trainer Bryan Smart would have taken great confidence from his performance.
Jockey booking is significant with in-form Joe Fanning taken over in the saddle for the first time. A repeat of his latest run and he will certainly take some beating in this maiden.
Just a head separated RED STRIPES and Gossip over C&D last week with the selection coming out the wrong end of the photo finish. Gossip got a good run in that race to get up on the line and may need luck in running again here. I expect course specialist Red Stripes, who is a 5-time course and distance winner, to get first run. George Rooke takes over in the saddle, taking 5lb off, and Red Stripes and Trainer Lisa Williamson will be looking to win this race two years on the bounce.
