An open-looking novices’ handicap chase in which it could be worth taking a chance on chasing debutant JACK VALENTINE. He has managed to win a bumper and a maiden hurdle so far, but he is the type that Venetia Williams will improve further now sent chasing. Jack Valentine seems to revel in the mud, so conditions won’t be an issue for him and, provided his jumping holds up over the larger obstacles, he has the ability to win races from this mark.
PARICOLOR won a couple of races in this grade over two miles at this track in November and completed a hat-trick at Taunton last month, not needing to improve to land the odds but doing so in comfortable fashion. Admittedly, he found life much tougher back in a handicap from a mark of 125 at Fakenham last time, but he comes out well at the weights back at this level, and given his record in this company, he looks the one to beat.
Only four runners set to go to post for this listed event and it is hard to see ZAMBELLA not completing a hat-trick. She has won a couple of similar events on her first two starts over fences, beating Stormy Ireland on her debut at Bangor in November and followed up in style at Warwick last time. Zambella really attacked her fences on that occasion and looks an exciting chaser moving forward, and the switch to a right-handed track looks a good move given she has shown a tendency to jump right at her fences. She is a smart mare in the making and it will be disappointing if she doesn’t win.

FANFARON DINO is a half-brother to several winners, notably last season’s Champion Hurdle victor Epatante, and he looks one to follow in handicaps. He started the even-money favourite on his debut in a bumper, but was seemingly brought along with handicaps in mind over hurdles, and duly proved an opening mark of 87 all wrong at Uttoxeter last month. He looked thrown in based on his bumper run and won with plenty in hand, tanking along throughout and produced to lead on the run-in for a very comfortable success. A subsequent 13 lb rise is justified and Fanfaron Dino should have plenty more to offer.
A case can be made for a few here but the most persuasive one is for OVERWORKDUNDERPAID, who made a winning start for his new yard when going in at Hexham last month and remains on a good mark despite a 4 lb rise. He seemed to be perked up by a first-time visor on that occasion and should be able to follow up if the headgear has the desired effect again. Lickpenny Larry is sure to have a say on the back of his resurgent second at Warwick, while recent Huntingdon winner Lord Sparky is another to consider in an open handicap.
FONTAINE COLLONGES made a winning debut for connections in a bumper at Ludlow last season and was pitched in at the deep end on hurdling debut in a Grade 2 at Warwick on his next start. She had a breathing operation ahead of her return in less-taxing company at Wincanton on Boxing Day and shaped encouragingly, looking threatening approaching the straight but unable to go with the first two at the business end of the race. Fontaine Collonges looks a chaser in the making, but she sets the standard on form here, while there should also be more to come.
