LORD OF THE ALPS has returned from a break better than ever and remains unexposed on the all-weather (hasn’t finished out of the first two in three starts). He confirmed the promise of his Kempton run when making all to resume winning ways over this trip at Wolverhampton on Saturday. That was a career-best performance and he makes plenty of appeal to race from the same mark. Admittedly, he needs to prove his effectiveness on fibresand, but he represents a yard with a good record here and it often pays to be handy round this track.
This looks an interesting sprint handicap which features several that go well at this track. SLOWMO, a two-time course and distance winner, pulled clear with a much-improved sort last week, and looks the one to beat on the back of that effort. He is due to be 4 lb higher in the weights in the future, so is ahead of his mark, and another reproduction of that effort will see him hard to beat. Thegreatestshowman and Giogiobbo finished first and second in a course-and-distance handicap six days ago and can pose the biggest threats.

Mick Appleby continues to go great guns and MOTAWAAFEQ, who benefited from the hood being refitted and a return to fibresand when winning a course-and-distance handicap last month, tops the shortlist once again. He took advantage of a tumbling mark to beat the reopposing Custard The Dragon by a head, and he was always holding that rival despite being sent for home early enough in the straight. Motawaafeq remains well treated on old form following a 3 lb rise in the weights and he can confirm his superiority.
Plenty are in with chances here but preference is for PARALLEL WORLD, who shaped as if amiss when down the field over course and distance last month. His previous record at the track reads 112, so it wasn’t anything to do with the surface, and the fact he was well beaten entering the home straight having been well backed beforehand suggests he wasn’t 100 per cent on the day. Therefore, he is well worth another chance to get back on the up from what still looks a lenient mark.
SAMOVAR loves it round here (six-time course winner) and he resumed winning ways in gutsy fashion over five furlongs on New Year’s Day. He lost little in defeat turned out under a penalty on Sunday, beaten only by another course specialist who had fallen in the weights and attracted support in the betting. Samovar was only caught late on that day by the winner who stays further and it is interesting that connections are again running him back quickly. He is clearly in top form and another bold bid is expected.
Ivan Furtado is in great form at present and MOMTALIK landed a gamble when belatedly opening his account in a minor event over course and distance on Sunday, always travelling the best and kept up to his work in the closing stages. Admittedly, that was only a weak race, but he has been found another good opportunity here and it will be disappointing if he isn’t able to follow up that success.
An open apprentice handicap to finish, and a chance is taken on TILSWORTH ROSE, who is best forgiven her latest run over course and distance when she was soon detached after a slow start due to the blindfold being removed late. She has gone well at this track previously, though, and is only 2 lb higher in the weights than for her last success at Nottingham in October.
