2.30pm – Dagui Lotois
Al Maktoum Challenge R1 Presented By Longines – Dirt
This is possibly the most interesting race on the card. The pure breed Arabians don’t get much love too often in tipping pieces but the race has some of the main market protagonists either drawn wide or having better turf form than dirt form.
DAGUI LOTOIS ran an eye catching race in December in the trial for this race and is arguably the horse open to the most improvement having just turned five years old. Drawn in stall 11, we ideally don’t want to see him trapped too wide as he isn’t going to get the lead in this contest that has a number of front runners.
This is an open race and is a difficult puzzle to solve with top UAE trainer Satish Seemar is double-handed at the front of the market in Lavaspin and Behavioral Bias, with Behavioral Bias edging favouritism on the back of a good second in a Listed contest over course and distance in early December.
But I was really taken with DARK SILVER Silver on his UAE and dirt debut and he may be able to translate his Jebel Ali form to Meydan. He is treated kindly by the UAE handicapper for his win and runs here off a light weight.

A typical Carnival turf handicap in store for us where 15 runners go to post and we are offering an extra place to help punters solve the puzzle. The draw is always crucial, with a high draw forcing horses to travel wide for much of the bend, but against conventional wisdom, I want to be with CAPE CAVALLI who has the proverbial ‘car park’ draw in stall 12.
He was last seen when running poorly at York last August, he appeals to me as a horse that can thrive at the carnival and the Simon Crisford team have are no strangers to picking up Carnival races with these types. It is notable that top jockey William Buick takes the ride for the former Godolphin racing manager.
The UAE 1000 Guineas Trial has attracted a field of 11, but four of these are using the race to try get a handicap mark to make it into future Carnival races. Best to avoid the outsiders in the betting here. Godolphin are represented by just the five runner with LOOKTOTHERAINBOW fitting the typical billing of a Charlie Appleby runner that goes on to win a UAE Guineas or Oaks having, won late last year on the Kempton all weather track in a ‘makes-all’ performance. This daughter of Dubawi is also notably a sister to Ribchester, who was a four-time Group 1 winning miler.
