Tampere has improved with every start and showed fairly useful form when second on her handicap debut at Chelmsford in November. Held up in the early stages, she travelled fluently and put in a strong late bid but could never quite get on terms, leaving the impression she would have been suited by a stronger gallop. That form sets the standard now back in a novice, and she may yet have even more to offer after only four starts. The drop back in trip is the only slight concern, but she’s likely to prove too classy for this lot anyway with Jamie Spencer taking over in the saddle.
Amtiyaz recorded back-to-back victories on the all-weather and then shaped better than the bare result when his winning sequence was brought to a halt over this course and distance last time. He was ultimately beaten two lengths into third but looked unlucky not to finish closer, staying on strongly after being forced to switch away from trouble entering the final two furlongs. Still relatively lightly raced as a stayer, Amtiyaz is only 1 lb higher here and deserves another chance to prove himself on a good mark for John Gosden, who has an impressive 24% strike rate at Kempton in recent seasons.

Ghaith was out of his depth when fourth in a class 2 event at Wolverhampton on Boxing Day, but the run wasn’t totally devoid of promise under the circumstances, keeping on well to be beaten only three lengths (strong form). This represents the weakest race he has contested in nearly a year, with his last appearance in a 0-85 resulting in a four-length win from only 1 lb lower at Wolverhampton. It’s likely to be only a matter of time before he takes advantage of his falling mark, especially with the David Loughnane yard in such good heart (82% of horses running to form).
