Tipperary Tiger started at 10/1 but had no trouble winning a competitive end-of-season maiden at Doncaster last month and he looks very interesting making his all-weather debut. He knew what was required on debut, pushed along to make rapid headway around two furlongs from home and drawing clear soon after to win by three and a quarter lengths. The fibresand surface at Southwell is a unique surface, but Tipperary Tiger’s sire has a good record on it, as does his trainer Karl Burke, and he should take plenty of beating if taking to it.
Birkenhead is a consistent sprinter who proved better than ever when winning a course and distance handicap on his debut at this track in November. Admittedly, he wasn’t in the same form at Newcastle last time, racing freely and having no more to offer at the business end of the race. He could be worth chancing retuned to this venue, though, given the impression he made, where he has several of these in behind. A professional jockey is back aboard now, he has a good draw in stall 4, and a big run is expected at likely good odds.

The Retriever ran up to his best to resume winning ways over seven furlongs at this course last month and confirmed that return to form when finishing runner-up over the same course and distance five days ago. He was beaten only by one who showed much-improved form for the switch to fibresand that day, and The Retriever won’t be bothered by the return to a mile. He looks more assured since fitted with cheekpieces and he should be hard to keep out of the places again.
