CARROTHERS cost plenty as a yearling and immediately showed fairly useful form when third on his debut at Newcastle in October. Held up in the early stages, he threatened briefly over a furlong out but ran green under pressure – just plugging on to be beaten 4-and-three-quarter lengths.
The winner Rebel Romance gave that form a boost when following up on his next start at Kempton, while the runner-up has also advanced his form in defeat subsequently. Carrothers remains with potential as he gains in experience and should take plenty of beating if taking to this surface, representing the David Simcock yard that continues in good heart (72% of horses running to form).
LOCH NESS MONSTER was well backed and duly returned to form to take advantage of a drop in the weights over this course and distance 12 days ago. He was held up early but made steady headway to lead in the back straight, then kicking clear and finding plenty to land the spoils by a length-and-a-half.
He clearly relished this longer trip and can effectively race from the same mark here, with jockey Erika Parkinson being able to claim her full 7lbs allowance. This looks an excellent opportunity for him to follow up if continuing to go the right way.

A three-time winner on the all-weather in the early part of this year, SPLIT DOWN SOUTH took a step back in the right direction when fourth over this course and distance last time. He was comfortably beaten in the end, but there was plenty of encouragement to be taken from his effort given how the race developed.
He fared much the best of those who attempted to come from near the back of the field. Now 2 lbs below his last winning mark, he’s certainly not one to write off and makes plenty of each-way appeal here, with Rossa Ryan replacing a 5lb claimer in the saddle.
