Frank Hickey and Paddy Power have selected their best bets ahead of a packed weekend of racing action.

Speaking on the latest episode of our twice-weekly From The Horse’s Mouth podcast, the deadly duo have looked towards Doncaster and Newcastle for their banker selections.

Frank Hickey

1.43pm, Doncaster (Saturday) – Ashington

I’m going to Doncaster on Saturday for my best bet, with ASHINGTON in the 2m handicap hurdle. Very useful over hurdles and has won two of his last seven starts and has hit the places in four of the others.

The form is very strong in his last two starts in handicaps, particularly in the context of this race. He was second to Sebastopol at Musselburgh in February off a mark of 121, beaten by half a length. He was then third last time out at Cheltenham off a mark of 126 – he was beaten 13 lengths but that doesn’t tell the whole story. He was nearly taken out at the second-last hurdle by a faller, lost all momentum and loads of ground. He did very well to get going again and finish third.

That form looks very solid as well because the winner Tegerek went to the Greatwood on his next start 8lbs higher and was beaten by just three lengths in third. The second was beaten by a head in a Cheltenham handicap on his next start off 2lbs higher. The fourth also won at Plumpton on his next start.

Ashington runs off the same mark, and Kevin Brogan takes 7lbs off as well, so he’s a steal.

3.15pm, Newcastle (Saturday) – Pym

I don’t think this is a great race, and for that reason I think PYM – even at 3/1 – is appealing. His performance to beat If The Cap Fits was savage so he looks like a Grade 1 horse in a race that is nowhere near Grade 1 class.
