Horse Racing tips: Jason Weaver's 6 Friday picks at Newcastle & Dundalk

Newcastle 17:15 Military Man

Roger Varian’s maiden had a very nice introduction at Newmarket on his debut and was expected to leave that form well behind when a well-punted favourite at Wolverhampton last time. Military Man still raced very greenly and babyish in the early stages and was not knocked about once his chance had gone. Runs in his first handicap on what looks a very realistic mark he has to be of interest and this straight, stiff, mile looks perfect as looked a little unbalanced on the turns at Wolverhampton.

Dundalk 17:30 Mogwli

Mogwli has only ever had one try on the all-weather at Fundalk but has been pretty aggressively and successfully campaigned on the turf. He’s won a couple of times over 6 furlongs at the Curragh with some ease in the ground, although has yet to be successful over this long sprint distance of 7f.

It looks well within his compass however and we have a handy little rider in Jack Cleary taking off a massive 10lbs on Friday night. From a favourable draw in stall six, he can take a handy pitch behind the pace setters and pounce.

Dundalk 18:00 Bringloid

This stablemate of Mogwli is only having her seventh lifetime start, so she is just starting to show her full potential for trainer Willie McCreery. Last time she found herself locked away in behind the leaders for most of the straight and only managed to get clear run in well inside the final furlong when the race was over.

Her rider obviously felt that she could’ve been a touch more aggressive in her run style and so they reach for the visor first time tonight for added focus. She looks primed to strike.

Newcastle 18:15 Captain Jameson

A three-time winner on the turf so far, but has only had four races on a synthetic surface. This is also just Captain Jameson’s second try over course & distance. He never looked like getting involved last time in the early stages, but fairly flew when it was all over to snatch third spot so I’m hoping given that experience he will be able to travel a touch kinder in the early stages and not give himself too much ground to make up.

There is no getting away from the fact he is well handicapped.

Dundalk 19:30 Drummond Warrior

Denis Hogan’s runner looked a really decent prospect when winning at Windsor when trained by Pam Sly and got a rating of 85 after that success. However, his form tailed off then and Drummond Warrior was picked up at the sales for £26,000. He could well prove a very shrewd purchase.

Ran over 5 furlongs last time for his new connections but will be better suited to this 6f test tonight. Has dropped to an attractive mark of just 74 and he could pop up at big each-way odds.

Newcastle 19:45 Herringswell

Henry Spiller’s runner has to be one of the most unlucky racehorses in the country, even allowing for the fact that she has won four times. Herringswell has had more than her share of bad luck in the starting stalls, in the run of the race and just generally getting no rub of the green, whatsoever.

Luckily for us, she is likely to slip under the radar and go off at double-digit odds which makes her a very exciting prospect at an each-way price to set up the weekend.
