Ruby Walsh and Frank Hickey have cast their eyes over Sunday’s card at Punchestown – with a little help from our very own Paddy Power.
Speaking on the latest episode of the From The Horse’s Mouth podcast, our deadly tipster duo found themselves in agreement over every single race discussed – which must be a first!
Ruby: “Pencilfulloflead is a fair horse but I loved LATEST EXHIBITION at Punchestown the last day. He made a mistake very early in the race and it was going to be the making or breaking of him – it was the making of him, and he went and attacked the next couple of jumps. He was a really good novice hurdler and I think he’ll win.”
Frank: “I agree with what Ruby said, and I really liked LATEST EXHIBITION as well. He got better as the race went on and you get the feeling he’s going to improve further. He’s a lovely horse and I’ll be very disappointed if he gets beaten.”
Ruby: “On the book Black Tears is best in here with a rating of 148 and she has no penalty as well so she is getting weight from the others. Theoretically, Black Tears is the one to beat but I’m going to stick my neck out for ELIMAY. I think she’s an improving mare and she loves the soft ground. The trip will suit her, unlike Buildmeupbuttercup who will be stretched, and I think she could just be the one.
“The handicapper says no, but I’m not sure if this is really a race to study the handicap marks. Elimay could be a little bit better than the book suggests, while Black Tears is slightly overrated at 148. Magic Of Light at 149 is a better chaser.”
Frank: “Black Tears is suited to a really strong pace in a big field and she probably won’t get that here, so I agree with Ruby. And he knows, between ELIMAY and Buildmeupbuttercup, which one is working better. So if he says Elimay, I’m not going disagree with him.”
Paddy: “I concur again.”

Ruby: “Dewcup for Ted Walsh and Baptism Of Fire for Henry De Bromhead are both in here as novices receiving weight. It’s a small field with a big pot, and it’s just up the road for my dad. He’s sent Dewcup up and if he jumps around he surely beats Born By The Sea and Caddy Shack so if he beats Baptism Of Fire he could be second. But FURY ROAD is rated 151 and is going to be something hard to beat in this.”
Frank: “I agree with Ruby. FURY ROAD is very likely to make it into a Stayers’ Hurdle horse and even with a 5lb penalty he should be hard to beat.”
Paddy: “I don’t concur this time, and I’m going to give BAPTISM OF FIRE a chance. Last time out he upset Wide Receiver when he was odds-on and he could take another big scalp here.”
Frank: “I think it’s as simple as saying back SAINT ROI for the Champion Hurdle. Not many horses can win the County Hurdle like he did, and he looks good enough to make the step up in grade. If you ask me who is the most likely winner of the Champion Hurdle right now, I know Epatante is favourite but I would say Saint Roi. I think he’s very good.”
Ruby: “I like SAINT ROI, and can’t believe he somehow managed to get beaten in a maiden hurdle at Clonmel. He then went to Tramore and bolted in, and his third run since coming over from France was the County Hurdle where he didn’t come off the bridle to beat Aramon, Abacadabras has a run under his belt but so does Saint Roi, reappearing at Tipperary, and we really like him. It’s 42 days since he ran and I wouldn’t put anyone off him.”
