The weather and therefore the ground conditions are the two vital components to hang your hat on during the three-day Paddy Power meet at Cheltenham and Friday looks sure to offer us ground on the springy side for a change.

If that is the case have a very close look at CASTLE ROBIN in the opening handicap hurdle (13.15) over an extended 21 furlongs. Despite jumping left throughout he absolutely hacked up at Carlisle last time out on ground that could have been a shade on the deep side for him.

Turning anti clockwise will help him and with so few miles on the clock and reverting to a better surface, the son of Robin Des Champs has outstanding claims off only a 2lbs higher mark in this slightly better contest.

The last time BORN SURVIVOR ran on a genuinely good surface he simply blew away his rivals in the Listed handicap chase at Ayr on Scottish National weekend. That success came off a rating of 142 and now four outings later he can race off 147 in what looks a moderate turn out for the class two level at 13.50. I will be having a major each-way play if the weather remains kind.

French ace Easyland renews rivalry with Tiger Roll in the Cross Country Chase 15:00 and on my private ratings I have him just 4lbs behind Gold Cup winner Al Boum Photo. He will surely prove too good again for the two- time Grand National winner, almost certainly past his best as an impending 11-year-old.

Those problems aside for the dual National hero, he was absolutely booted into touch by Easyland last March at the Festival. The rest of his rivals will almost certainly be stray has-beens or glorified handicappers.

The declarations for Saturday and Sunday are harder to dissect with at least 7mm of rain expected through the weekend.

As for the Paddy Power Gold Cup with his stable in such great form, SAINT SONNET could be a level above his rivals off a mark of just 147, but beware the Tizzard factor!

His first string may well be last year’s unlucky Slate House who tipped up two fences out, but in his recent stable tour, Col stated that his ‘second string’ THE RUSSIAN DOYEN, could be nicely handicapped and with a run already under his belt, the seven-year-old could be best of the double-figure priced entries.

If the ground does deteriorate then MAIN FACT is a rather obvious player in the Greatwood Hurdle alongside one of the forgotten entries OAKLEY.

The last named could never get a blow in behind Saint Roi in the County Hurdle, but he would be a force in this first big handicap hurdle of the season with a really promising comeback at Wetherby under his belt when that sharp track didn’t really play to his strengths. But as with all of the above conjecture based stabs, the weather is king!
