Bought for £280,000 after winning his sole outing in points, Amarillo Sky made his debut under Rules in a novice hurdle at Newbury on Thursday that looks sure to prove an informative contest. Admittedly, it’s difficult to take a high view of the form given how slow the early gallop was, but there was bundles of potential on display, the winner Dusart looking a most exciting prospect as he made a successful start to his career in impressive fashion.
Amarillo Sky also shaped with plenty of promise in a dead-heat for fourth. He is bred more for stamina than speed, so a steadily-run race over two miles was never going to play to his strengths, racing prominently but unable to quicken when the tempo lifted in the straight.
It augurs well for his long-term prospects that he was able to run so admirably under unfavourable circumstances, while it’s also worth pointing out that the Colin Tizzard yard has yet to hit top form. He’ll stay further and should prove a different proposition as the season progresses, with the large ‘P’ attached to his Timeform rating denoting that he is open to significant improvement.

Not A Role Model made all to win the conditional jockeys’ handicap chase that kicked off Saturday’s card at Wincanton in good style, though he was undoubtedly seen to maximum effect given how the race developed, with barely anything managing to get into it from off the pace.
One horse who can probably have his effort marked up under the circumstances is the fourth Cap du Nord, who fared much the best of those who attempted to deliver a challenge from the rear of the field. Still last four out, he made steady headway on the inner before his lack of a recent run seemed to take its toll in the straight, not being given a hard time once his chance had gone.
He certainly shaped better than the bare result, leaving the impression he has returned at least as good as ever after nine months off. Now only 2lb higher than when recording his latest success at Fakenham in January, he should be up to winning something similar before too long.

Kitty’s Light

There was in-running carnage during the Badger Beers Silver Trophy at Wincanton on Saturday, with El Presente (winner), Potterman (runner-up), My Way (fourth) and Sizing At Midnight (fell at the third last) all trading at odds-on at one stage or another.
One horse who was never really sighted with a winning chance was the eventual third Kitty’s Light, though he still emerged with considerable credit given his profile and how the race went for him. A four-year-old making only his fifth start over fences, he was left with plenty to do after several jumping errors put him on the back foot, while he was also hampered by Sizing At Midnight’s fall just as he was starting to make some headway.
The way he finished once back on an even keel was most eye-catching, staying on strongly to be beaten only three and a quarter lengths. He seems to possess remarkable stamina for a youngster and should have a big staying prize in his sights if brushing up on his jumping, with this experience in a big field unlikely to be lost on him.
