The qualifying heats for Ireland’s Premier Greyhound racing event starts at Shelbourne Park this Friday and Saturday night, and Sky Sports’ Darrell Williams gives us his best Outright picks as well as his best bets for some Friday and Saturday night heats.
I like the look of Trinity Junior in the ante-post Outright Winner market. He could be underestimated despite a win in the Irish Champion Stakes and comes into this year’s competition in peak form. He’s posted three course and distance wins. He gernerally handles everything that’s thrown at him despite making the occassional mised break.
He’s quite strong and not all about the early pace so I’d be disappointed if he doesn’t keep qualifying out of the heats and improve as he goes along. He’s a real ‘competiton’ dog and has reached the last six in the Easter Cup, Juvenile Derby finalist and St Leger finalist.
He’s my No. 1 pick to be the 2023 Irish Greyhound Derby champion.
My next choice is a totally different type of dog in De Lahdedah.
Laim Dowling’s October ’21 pup is very unexposed but made a big impact with a huge performance a couple of weeks ago. He’s a Trap 1 dog and get that draw on Saturday night to start off. He has won from the middle traps before. I’ll take him as my second outright pick.
Friday – Heat 9 – Trinity Junior (Trap 4)
Well, I’m going to make Trinity Journey my nap. I’m very keen on this dog hopefully going all the way in the competition. I think he’s getting at his best form. Now he has a middle drawer and there are questions as to whether that’s ideal for him, but what I’ve seen so far I don’t think it’s going to be an issue.
He’s comes in on the back of three wins over same course and distance (C&D) in succession. You won the Champion Stakes so it’s brilliant form for my NAP. The Selection goes in heat 9.
Friday – Heat 7 – The Other Kobe (Trap 3)
The Next Best Is The Other Kobe for Jennifer O’Donnell, of course, won the competition with All Moria last year. Amazingly at this ground took exit in the first round. It was just one of those things. A rare blip, however, has been pretty consistent all the way through.
A good competition dog got up to the final, The Plate last year we got to the final of the selection at Waterford in the Champions Stakes, so I think he’s got the pace to lead. I’m going to make The Other Kobe my next best choice in the hea 7 on Friday evening.
Saturday – Heat 18 – Scaglietti (Trap 4)
I’m going to go for Scaglietti, who runs in the 18th heat on Saturday evening. Unfortunately, he got knocked over in the Champions Stakes final. But had run a big race in the semifinals. Bear in mind this greyhound has been off the track for quite a while. I think he was off since May was a Kirby Finalist and came third there.
I think he’s still got a chance to lead. That’s the key factor for Saturday’s chances at the track. Well, he has three wins from five over the C&D. So, get first, run, and simply, Scaglietti can go on and make a good run of it.
Saturday – Heat 22 – De Lahdedah (Trap 1)
De Lahdedah, or you, you know, ran a massive race a couple of Saturdays ago, very young, growing up for Liam Dowling, but we just don’t know exactly how good it is. It’s too hard to make a judgement at this stage, but he’s four wins from six in his career so very, very quick. He’s got a wonderful pace going down the back, and I just want to stay with him until he does something wrong. At the moment. I believe he can go through. certainly land this heat on Saturday, and hopefully go a long way in the competition.
