The 2022 running of the Irish Derby with 26 exciting heats over Friday and Saturday night for the opening round all building up to the final on September 24th. The reigning champion Susie Sapphire unfortunately doesn’t take her place so a new name will be on the trophy this year and I have 4 selections regarding the outright markets.

WELCOME TO PADDY POWER NEWS!

Vincenzo

My first selection is the Patrick Guilfoyle trained VINCENZO (Droopys Sydney – Alien Nipper) who won the Champion 550 when last seen in July, has been off since but trialled very impressive last week when posting 28;39 over the 525-yard trip. This dog start and stays and I think he will have a big say if returning to the track in the same form when last seen. At the time of writing, he is the shortest of my four selections.

Born Warrior

My second selection is BORN WARRIOR (Ballymac best – Mountaylor queen) who is an incredible greyhound with a record of 9 wins from only 12 starts and placed on the other three occasions shows the class act this dog is. He won the Champion stakes plate final so no doubt this dog is coming into the derby flying and at a current price of 33/1 I think he will have a big chance.

Sentimental Lad

Next up is SENTIMENTAL LAD (Droopys Sydney – Vigorous Hilary) who has been really flourishing in recent weeks when breaking the track record in July. Since then, contested the Champion stakes final when finishing third after finding plenty of trouble in running. Can hit the lids on occasion but he will be one of the stronger stayers in the derby and if he turns close will be staying on well and I think will be hard to keep out of the frame and at a price of 33/1 he can be a player.

Droopys Gloss

Finally, I’m looking at DROOPYS GLOSS (Coolvanny jap – Droopys Talia) who is an ultra-consistent lady who won the Juvenile Derby last year and got to the semi-final stages of the oaks a few months ago. This lady has 29:32 over the C&D and if repeating that sort of run will see herself in with a great chance of going well. she is also very versatile with trap draws as she has won from both trap 1 and 6 in the past so she will always run a decent race and at a current price of 40/1, she is one to consider.
