Phil Mickelson, who became the oldest major winner in history when landing last year’s tournament, is on a break from the game after facing criticism for his comments about the Saudi-backed golf breakaway series.

Who will succeed the American as the US PGA Championship winner? We’ve taken a look at Paddy Power’s odds to pick out the leading contenders.

Scottie Scheffler is bidding to become the first player since Jordan Spieth in 2015 to claim the first two majors of the year after winning last month’s US Masters. The world number one has tied for fourth and eighth in his two appearances in previous US PGA Championships.

Jon Rahm will attempt to win the US PGA Championship for the first time in his career, with his best result in the tournament coming in 2018 when tying for fourth. The world number two secured his first win of the calendar year in the Mexico Open earlier this month.

Rory McIlroy was in red-hot form at Augusta last month to finish second in the US Masters but he hasn’t claimed a Grand Slam since 2014. The Irishman has won the US PGA Championship twice in his career but finished in the top 10 just once in the last seven years.

Justin Thomas is another previous US PGA Championship winner in the field after triumphing at the Quail Hollow Club in 2017. The 29-year-old missed the cut last year and has failed to win a tournament of any kind since the 2021 Players Championship.

Jordan Spieth will become the sixth player in history to complete the career Grand Slam if he triumphs at Southern Hills as the US PGA Championship is the only major to elude him so far. The Texas native heads into the tournament in fine form after winning the RBC Heritage and placing second in the AT&T Byron Nelson.

Four-time US PGA Championship winner Tiger Woods is back for another crack after finishing 47th at the US Masters last month on his comeback from serious injuries sustained in a car crash.
