Christiaan Bezuidenhout to win

The Alfred Dunhill Championship can be difficult to assess due to changes to the layout and, therefore, the difficulty of the setup. The strokes gained stats aren’t the most reliable either, so there is no harm in keeping it simple and starting the card with a recent winner at Leopard Creek.

Christiaan Bezuidenhout, who warmed up for this week with a sixth-place finish at the Nedbank Golf Challenge after a long break, fits the bill.

His triumph here in 2020 was perhaps the most prestigious of his four DP World Tour victories. It came after an Andalucia Masters success the previous year at Valderrama, considered a comparable course to Leopard Creek.

Greens in regulation and a tidy short game are key metrics at this firm, fast course. The South African excels in those areas and can plot his way around a track he knows particularly well to contend for the win.

Matti Schmid – Top Continental European

The podium was entirely South African in this competition a year ago, but Matti Schmid was among the best of the rest, ending in a tie for fourth to keep up his excellent record in the rainbow nation.

Schmid’s exemplary Leopard Creek debut was hardly a surprise: he had already registered top-five berths at the Steyn City Championship and Investec South African Open Championship in 2022.

The German enjoys the conditions in this region, and while it might be a tall order for him to disturb the elite home players, he may be the most suited European for this particular test.

Andy Sullivan – Top UK&I

Andy Sullivan impressed on his first two visits to Malalane before its renovation, posting finishes of T3 and T14 in 2012 and 2013. He missed the cut in 2014 and skipped six renewals before appearing in 2023 for the first time since the course was revamped.

Undeterred by the faster-running Bermudagrass fairways and ultra dwarf Bermuda greens, the Englishman was tied for seventh in his final tournament at the end of an underwhelming year.

Sullivan has not been at his best in 2024 either, but he has made steps in the right direction. The 37-year-old has posted four top-fives this year, the first of which came in South Africa at the SDC Championship in March.

With form figures of 14-24-27-14, Sullivan’s game is in a decent place. The middle two of those were in strong fields in the Middle East. With weaker competition this week, top UK and Ireland honours are up for grabs.

For good measure, Sullivan has generally performed well at the correlating Valderrama, with four top 20s in six attempts.
