Nedbank Golf Challenge – Nicolai Hojgaard to win
Four back-to-back Top 20s to end the season were too little, too late for Nicolai Hojgaard. The Dane did not get a chance to defend his DP World Tour Championship title last month as he finished 59th in the Race to Dubai.
Another year on the periphery will be of no interest to the slightly older Hojgaard twin, as he eyes another Ryder Cup campaign and a return to the winning ways, which saw him ranked 30th in the world in January.
The 23-year-old was runner-up to Max Homa at last year’s Nedbank Golf Challenge, and in a field without much depth, he has the class to go close again on his return to the Gary Player Country Club.
Approach play is key in Sun City and Hojgaard has excelled in that department in recent weeks.
Nedbank Golf Challenge – Sebastian Soderberg to win (Each-Way)
Giving up an eight-shot 54-hole lead at the Scandinavian Mixed seemed to derail the second half of Sebastian Söderberg’s season. A fresh start should do him good as he returns to a venue where he has excelled on his last two visits.
The Swede’s driving and putting were disappointing three weeks ago in Dubai, but he ranked in the Top 10 for greens in regulation in three of his four rounds. Söderberg performed well with the flat stick at the Gary Player Country Club, helping him register two top-sixes.
A combination of the encouraging approach play displayed at the DP World Tour Championship, and his usually reliable putting in Sun City, could see the former Omega European Masters champion outrun his odds this week.
World Hero Challenge – Scottie Scheffler to win
It should come as no surprise that Scottie Scheffler is priced so short to win at Albany for the second year on the run. In fact, I expected his odds to be a touch skinnier given his strike rate in 2024 and the relatively weak set of participants at the Hero World Challenge.
Just like last year, Scheffler enters the Tiger Woods-hosted tournament on the back of very limited stroke play practice, but having finished 2nd-2nd-1st in his last three attempts at this competition, he should feel well equipped to see off the other 19 golfers.
World Hero Challenge – Patrick Cantlay – Winner W/O Scottie Scheffler
He has been a model of consistency since his T3 at the US Open, but Patrick Cantlay is winless for over two years and now might be the time to put that right.
His Albany debut in 2018 almost resulted in a win, but he had to settle for fifth place, despite a Sunday 64 as Jon Rahm rode off into the sunset. Only five other players in the field have recorded a Top 5 finish on this course, and the man who backed up a decent end to the season with a fantastic Presidents Cup showing, may be Scheffler’s closest challenger in The Bahamas.
