Andalucia Masters

Rasmus Neergard-Petersen to win (each-way)

Following a T18 finish in Paris last week, Rasmus Neergard-Petersen forced his way into the world’s top 100 for the first time. The 25-year-old is the latest in an ever-growing list of Danes competing at the top end of DP World Tour events.

Real Club de Golf Sotogrande hosted the Andalucia Masters for the first time in 2023 after the previous venue, Valderrama, teamed up with LIV Golf. Neergard-Petersen did not participate in the tournament a year ago but has the attributes to flourish at a course where various playing styles offer a route to success.

Adrian Meronk triumphed last year despite only making 50 per cent of fairways, while second and third-place golfers Matti Schmid and Richard Mansell were each in the top five longest hitters for the week and hit over 60 per cent of fairways.

Neergard-Petersen can hit the ball far and straight, ranking 11th in strokes gained off the tee for the season. He is in 12th place in the greens in regulation standings for good measure, and if he can putt better than he did in France, he can make it four successive top 20s and perhaps challenge for the title.

Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen Winner

Adrian Otaegui to win (each-way)

2022 Andalucia Masters champion Adrian Otaegui was in the mix to retain his crown last year before a Sunday 74 scuppered his chances and he had to settle for T9. Still, it was an excellent effort on a new host course, and while his recent form is solid, if not spectacular, he is worth siding with at a big price to give it another go.

On Thursday and Friday at last year’s event, Otaegui was in the top five for driving accuracy and greens in regulation. He dropped off over the weekend as perhaps the pressure of defending the title in his home country understandably took its toll. With all eyes on other Spaniards such as Jon Rahm and David Puig this week, the five-time DPWT winner shouldn’t feel such strain.

His ball striking has been superb in 2024, and his final round 68 in Paris on Sunday showcased that as he found more fairways and greens than anybody else.

Adrian Otaegui Winner

Shriners Children’s Open

Matthew NeSmith Top 20 (Incl. Ties)

Lurking just outside the top 125 in the FedEx Cup Fall Standings, Matthew NeSmith must get a wriggle on if he can earn a Tour Card for 2025.

TPC Summerlin has typically been kind to the American, whose T42 in Las Vegas a year ago was his only finish outside the top 20 at the Shriners Children’s Open. He has managed a top-10 berth on every second visit to Nevada, and if he can keep up that trend, his immediate future will look a lot brighter.

He missed the cut at the Black Desert Championship, but each of NeSmith’s top 10 finishes this year came off of bad weeks, so that is not of great concern.

10/3
Matt NeSmith Top 20 Finish (Incl. Ties)

Any 2 of Tom Kim, Davis Thompson & Taylor Pendrith to Finish in the Top 10 (Incl. Ties)

Tom Kim, victorious in 2022 and 2023 at TPC Summerlin, is a clear favourite to secure the hat-trick, and rightly so. It is two months since he took part in a strokeplay event, though, and the Presidents Cup disappointment may have also had an impact. So, instead, I’d rather take him in a #WhatOddsPaddy proposition.

Taylor Pendrith has come in the top 10 in three of his last five PGA Tour starts and also came third at last year’s Shriners. Davis Thompson hasn’t played competitively since the BMW Championship and, therefore, isn’t such a slam dunk, but the world number 40 shouldn’t be too far off in this field.
