Tour Championship

East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia
TV: Sky Sports Golf, Sky Sports Main Event, Thursday 29th August – Sunday 1st September

East Lake hosts the Tour Championship for the 24th time this week as the top 30 players in the FedEx Cup standings compete for the $25m top prize.

The 72-hole handicap format will be used, as it has done every year since 2019, meaning Scottie Scheffler begins at -10, Xander Schauffele starts at -8, Hideki Matsuyama at -7, and so on.

Xander Schauffele to win

The undisputed two best golfers this year are in positions one and two heading into the season’s final event. Schauffele appeals at the quoted odds to overturn the two-shot deficit to beat Scheffler to the title.

In seven visits to East Lake, the Californian has never finished worse than seventh place, excluding handicaps, and has registered the lowest or joint-lowest 72-hole score on three occasions.

Scheffler entered the tournament as the top-ranked player in the last two years but struggled to capitalise on his advantage. In 2022, he shot 73 on Sunday, allowing Rory McIlroy to claim victory. Last year, he wasn’t a contender, as Schauffele and FedEx Cup winner Viktor Hovland went round in 18 fewer strokes across the four days.

Schauffele was the better player of the two at last week’s BMW Championship, and he can rely on his course form to get the job done in Atlanta.

Viktor Hovland Lowest 72 Hole Score (each-way)

It has been a poor year by Hovland’s standards, but after almost winning at TPC Southwind, he could take further positives from his efforts at Castle Pines, where he was in the top five from tee to green.

East Lake is a happy hunting ground for the Norwegian, who will need to play attack-minded golf to chase down the 15 players ahead of him and defend his FedEx Cup crown.

Considering his situation two weeks ago, qualifying for the Tour Championship is an achievement, and the reduced pressure in Georgia should work in his favour.

British Masters

The Belfry Hotel and Resort, Sutton Coldfield
TV: Sky Sports Golf, Thursday 29th August – Sunday 1st September

Six weeks after the Open Championship, the DP World tour returns to the UK for the British Masters at The Belfry.

The Warwickshire venue hosted this event from 2006 to 2008 and has done so again every year since 2021.

Andy Sullivan – Winner W/O Rasmus Højgaard, Thorbjørn Olesen, Tom Mckibbin, Tyrrell Hatton

Nuneaton-born Andy Sullivan has consistently performed well at this course, which he knows intimately from playing it hundreds of times. His recent form indicates he’s poised for another strong showing on this familiar ground.

The 37-year-old was in a six-way tie for the lead going into the final round last year and also recorded top-10 berths at The Belfry in 2020 and 2021.

Sullivan posted a T2 at Foxhills on the Asian Tour earlier this month, and he threatened to make a late charge in Denmark last week before losing his way on the final four holes. He doesn’t look too far off putting four solid rounds together.

Justin Walters – Top African

After a challenging couple of years, Justin Walters showed signs of a resurgence at the Danish Golf Championship. This could be perfect timing for the Belfry specialist, who narrowly lost in a playoff to Rasmus Hojgaard there in 2020 and tied for third at the British Masters two years ago.

The Top African category is a sensible target, but Thriston Lawrence is priced too short for my liking and skewing the market. He secured a comfortable win on the Sunshine Tour last week, but his best outings this year have tended to be followed by poorer displays.

Lawrence has flattered to deceive at The Belfry on his two previous visits, and with very few of the other African participants having success there either, Walters has a decent chance at a hefty price.
