PGA FedEx St Jude Championship

TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tennessee
TV: Sky Sports+, Thursday 15th – Sunday 18th August

The PGA Tour postseason gets underway in Memphis, Tennessee on Thursday as the top 70 players in the season-long rankings continue their quest for a shot at the FedEx Cup top prize of $25m.

Four of the last seven winners at TPC Southwind have ranked in the top five for strokes gained on approach en route to victory. Meanwhile, missing the fairway has tended to be particularly costly and more significant than the reward for long drives.

Collin Morikawa – Winner W/O Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele

As one of only four players on the PGA Tour to have hit more than 70% of fairways this season, Collin Morikawa can go well at a venue where he has never finished worse than T26 in four visits and was in a tie for fifth place two years ago.

The American has gained strokes off the tee and on approach in each of his last nine events and boasts a runner-up finish, plus three further top fives during that time. The only thing he hasn’t managed in 2024 is win, but given his career strike rate, it appears to be only a matter of time.

Morikawa’s short game let him down at the Olympics but his ball striking was the best it’s been all year. He was excellent on and around the greens at this event in 2023, and if his iron play stays at the level we’ve seen all summer, he won’t be far off the top of the leader board.

Tommy Fleetwood – Top European

As proven two weeks ago, when he collected an Olympic silver medal, Tommy Fleetwood loves the big occasion. The Englishman has seven major top-five finishes, and had the chance to triumph for the first time in North America at the FedEx St Jude Championship last year, falling just one stroke short of joining Lucas Glover and Patrick Cantlay in the playoff.

Fleetwood has seen three fellow Brits notch maiden PGA Tour titles in the last 10 weeks, but that can be an inspiration rather than a negative. TPC Southwind is the sort of course that could see the 33-year-old’s drought ended but the best value looks to be in the Top European market.

Rory McIlroy is the favourite but there is little to separate him and Fleetwood in terms of course history and current form. Ludvig Aberg is ahead of Fleetwood in the market, and while his skillset should translate well to this setup, many have struggled on debut at here and concerns remain over the Swede’s Sunday struggles.

DPWT Czech Masters

PGA National OAKS, Prague
TV: Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Golf, Thursday 15th – Sunday 18th August

The DP World Tour is back after a short break, and it’s a trip to the Czech Republic for the first tournament staging at PGA National OAKS.

Like the Albatross course which hosted the previous nine editions of the Czech Masters, the OAKS course is a long par 72 with fast-running fairways and quick greens.

Matthew Jordan – Winner (Each-Way)

For a man so accustomed to links, it was no surprise to see Matthew Jordan play well at the Open Championship, but a top-10 finish was perhaps beyond even his expectations.

This, in many ways, is a similar test to the links courses Jordan excels on. Bunkers are placed in tricky positions throughout the 18 holes, and wayward driving could result in serious trouble.

Jordan ranks 11th for strokes gained off the tee on the DP World Tour this season. His length will come in handy on the two 600-yard+ par-fives as well as the driveable par-four fifth.

Paddy is paying out the top six places of this competition for each-way picks.

Joe Dean – Top 20 Finish (Incl. Ties)

Like Jordan, Joe Dean put in a terrific showing at Royal Troon and has been driving the ball superbly in recent months.

He has three top fives in eight DPWT starts in 2024, two of which came on Bentgrass greens, and one at altitude. That’s two key features of PGA National OAKS that Dean can deal with.

The 2015 English Amateur champion is the fifth-best putter on the tour this season and can continue his charge for a place in the Tour Championship with a good result in Prague.

LIV Golf – Greenbrier

LLIV Golf Greenbrier, White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia
TV: DAZN and LIV Golf 1, Friday 16th – Sunday 18th August

Joaquin Niemann – Winner

The top-ranked player in the LIV standings, Joaquin Niemann, has the chance to become the 2024 champion, if he wins the event and Jon Rahm doesn’t finish higher than third.

He has led the way since winning the season opener at Mayakoba and can seal the deal at a course that holds happy memories for the Chilean. In 2019, Niemann wiped the floor with the rest of the field as he won the PGA Tour’s Greenbrier Classic by six strokes.

Three consecutive top sixes on the LIV tour and a top 10 at the Olympics are ideal preparation for him to return to the winner’s circle.
