The Open Final Day 2-Ball Acca (6/1)
13:35pm – Matthew Jordan to beat Justin Thomas
14:15pm – Russell Henley to beat Sam Burns
14:05pm – Xander Schauffele to beat Justin Rose
It’s been a superb Open Championship to date with the undoubted winner so far Royal Troon. Coming into the week there was talk from some quarters that the games biggest stars would overpower the course and we could see record scoring. With Mother Nature playing its part though nothing could have been further from the truth as the players have struggled in the elements to keep their ball in play.
As a result, heading into Sunday we have only nine players under par with Billy Horschel emerging from a rollercoaster Saturday on -4 under with a one shot lead over six players, including Xander Schauffele, Justin Rose and our pre event pick Russell Henley.
Horschel who produced an excellent round of 69 in brutal conditions on Saturday ranks first for the week in Driving Accuracy and sixth in approach play, proving that as suspected precision has been the key to success this week rather than power. A former Fedex Cup Champion Horschel should not be underestimated; however, this is unchartered waters for him and with so many big names stacked up just behind it is hard to fancy him to get the job done with any great confidence.
Of the six players tied for second the name that leaps out is that of Xander Schauffele. The PGA Champion looked as in control as anyone on Saturday as he matched Horschel’s 69 and he has the recent Major winning experience. Meanwhile you ignore Scottie Scheffler who sits one shot further back on -2 under at your peril. The world number one has put on his usual tee to green clinic this week and if his putter had remotely co-operated, he would be out of sight.
That all said though I am quietly confident that our pre-event selection Russel Henley can give us a big run today. The American has put on exactly the sort of long game display I expected from him and as mentioned before the event, to me he has the perfect game for The Open.
In all honesty though with so many players still in the mix this is incredibly tough to call and with Henley and Shane Lowry still in play from our pre-tournament selections I am happy to let them ride and leave the outright market alone.
Turning my attention to the final day’s two balls then I shall start by taking a risk on Matthew Jordan as an outsider when he tees off against Justin Thomas at 1.35pm.
Thomas did us a huge turn on Thursday when he got our week off to a flyer by bagging full place returns at 70/1 in the first-round leader market. That said the American’s inconsistencies reared their head on day two and it was to his credit in the end that he made the cut before posting a good number on Saturday.
Thomas is of course the superior player here, but Jordan is something of a links specialist finishing tenth at Hoylake last year posting a final round 70, and he was very impressive in the worst of the conditions yesterday. I’ll take a risk here then that Thomas’ 2024 inability to put two good days together comes to the fore again and the young Englishman can take advantage.
Next up I’ll boost our acca by taking Xander Schauffele at 2.05pm up against Justin Rose. Rose meanwhile was as good as anyone for the first two days, however he struggled more off the tee on Saturday on his way to a 73 and it may well be that the 43yr old is beginning to run out of steam. With Schauffele getting stronger as the week progresses you would expect him to have too much for the Englishman.
Finally I am going to wrap up our acca and our week with Russell Henley against Sam Burns when they head out at 2.15pm.
I have made my case for Henley already and while there is little to choose between this pair on paper he has been in more solid form this year than Burns, has greater Major experience and is more proven in the wind. With the layers struggling to separate them then he is the bet for me here.
