The final major of the golf season is finally here and we’re taking a look at the favourites ahead of the 2024 Open Championship at Royal Troon.
The venue last hosted the event back in 2016 when Henrik Stenson triumphed, and it’s most definitely a tough links course to navigate, with picturesque views to boot.
Rory McIlroy will be hoping to put his heartbreaking US Open second-placed finish behind him and lift the famous Claret Jug a decade on from his first and only win in the competition.
However, he doesn’t head to Scotland as the favourite, with Scottie Scheffler, unsurprisingly, leading the betting pack after an impressive season in which he’s won six titles including The Masters.
Last year’s champion was Brian Harman, in what was his first major career victory. Can lightning strike twice? Well, probably not as he isn’t expected to be in the mix this time around.
You can find all the Open Championship odds on the Paddy Power website and Paddy Power app, otherwise, here’s everything you need to know about all the favourites.
Scottie Scheffler
The Open is Scottie Scheffler‘s worst-performing major, with his highest finish of eighth coming in 2021.
He failed to perform in the US Open but finished eighth at the PGA Championship after being arrested and, of course, picked up the Green Jacket at Augusta.
It will be a big weekend for him on a tough course, but he’s certainly capable of producing a winning performance, which is why he’s the favourite.
Rory McIlroy
Rory McIlroy came so close to victory in the US Open, but it was snatched from him by Bryson DeChambeau. It was a bitter pill to swallow for the Irishman, who refused to speak to the media afterwards.
If there’s one way to make up for it then it’s to claim victory in your home major. McIlroy has the opportunity to lift the Claret Jug a decade on from his first and only victory.
He will have the crowd on his side, that’s for sure.
Xander Schauffele
At the age of 30, Xander Schauffele won his first-ever major championship with victory in the PGA back in April.
This has been the best year of his career so far and he will be full of confidence heading to Royal Troon. He’s no stranger to a links course and finished tied for second at this event back in 2018.
Bryson DeChambeau
After an impressive US Open victory, it’s no surprise to see Bryson DeChambeau this high in the betting.
DeChambeau continued to prove that playing in the LIV Golf League doesn’t mean you can’t taste success in any of the big majors.
His highest finish was tied for eighth two years ago.
Ludvig Aberg
Ludvig Aberg is playing in his first ever Open Championship having burst onto the professional scene following his debut just over a year ago.
The Swede has been impressive this season, placing second at the Masters and finishing tied for twelfth at the US Open.
He was a part of Europe’s winning Ryder Cup team last year and certainly has the potential to be a future major winner. So can he do it at Royal Troon?
Collin Morikawa
The world number six, Collin Morikawa, finished an impressive fourth at the Scottish Open this past week and knows what it takes to win The Open Championship having lifted the Claret Jug back in 2021.
He can’t be discounted and if he plays to his best then he’s likely to be in with another chance.
