Dechambeau Primed for Second Major on Classic Pinehurst Test

Heading into this week there was plenty of optimism that Pinehurst No 2 would serve up a great US Open test and fortunately with Mother Nature co-operating this has been the case.

The man who has handled the challenge of the firm fast conditions and the treacherous Donald Ross greens the best to date has been Bryson Dechambeau.

Outright Winner – Bryson Dechambeau

Whether you are a fan of ‘the Scientist’ or not what you can’t deny is that he is ‘box office’, something the game certainly needs at the moment. He has smiled and laughed his way through 54 holes engaging with fans and even signing autographs mid-round, all while posting a 7- under par three-round total to give himself a three-shot lead.

The question then is can he continue in the same vein today or will the pressure get to him? Ranking second from tee to green this week and fifth on the greens clearly all facets of Dechambeau’s game are in great working order. Add that to the fact that he already has a US Open under his belt and was so close to a second Major at Valhalla recently and there is no reason to think he will crumble today.

With the last 25 US Open winners all starting Sunday within four shots of the lead history tells us that if Dechambeau does falter the winner will come from the trio of players, Rory McIlroy, Patrick Cantlay, and Matthieu Pavon, who sit tied for second on 4- under and three back, although you can’t completely rule out our pre-event pick Hideki Matsuyama who will start five back tied in fifth alongside Ludvig Aberg on 2 Under.

McIlroy has been superb this week at avoiding the big numbers and he ranks first off the tee and from tee to green with the putter the weak link. With Cantlay and Pavon conversely relying heavily on their putters to date McIlroy certainly looks the pick of the chasers.

Collin Morikawa v Corey Conners – Collin Morikawa to Win

My hunch is that Dechambeau will hang on, however he makes limited appeal at odds, instead then I will focus on today’s two balls for an acca starting by siding with Collin Morikawa when he tees off at 18:37 UK time against Corey Conners.

Morikawa who was many people’s tip coming in to this week struggled over the first two days, however, everything clicked on Saturday as he moved through the field into the fringes of contention.

Conversely, Conners faltered coming home posting two bogeys and a double with his approach play costing him. This is a movie we have seen plenty of times before from the Canadian at the business end of big events and I expect two-time Major Champion Morikawa to have too much for him today.

Tyrrell Hatton v Tony Finau – Tyrrell Hatton to Win

Next up I will take Tyrrell Hatton against Tony Finau when they head out 15:48 UK time. Hatton loves a tough set up as proven when he triumphed at Bay Hill in 2020, and he has taken to Pinehurst this week. He talked yesterday post round about how well he had hit the ball and this was backed up by the fact he ranked second in approach on Saturday.

Having hit the front Finau crumbled on the backside making a triple bogey on 13 and the Englishman looks a great bet to see him off today.

Ludvig Aberg v Hideki Matsuyama – Hideki Matsuyama to Win

Teeing off next at 18:59 UK time we have Hideki Matsuyama and Ludvig Aberg and I am happy to chance Matsuyama at odds against.
Our pre-event pick Matsuyama produced a great backnine yesterday to give himself a chance if Dechambeau does falter.

Aberg of course is a generational talent who will land himself several of the game’s biggest trophies and he has been mostly superb this week.

Ultimately though this is still early days for him and he undoubtedly started to look edgy down the stretch yesterday. There is not much to choose between this pair, however, Matsuyama’s greater experience in this situation makes him the value bet as the outsider of two.

Patrick Cantlay v Rory McIlroy – Rory McIllory to Win

Finally, I will finish off our acca by taking Rory McIlroy against Cantlay in the penultimate pairing at 19:10 UK time.

The last time this duo played 18 holes together was in Saturday’s fourballs in Rome and nobody I am sure will have forgotten the astonishing scenes we witnessed on the 18th green between McIlroy and Cantlay’s caddie Jo LaCava.

Put any extra motivation to one side however and the stats tell us that McIlroy has been far the stronger from tee to green, while Cantlay as noted earlier has relied heavily on the putter. All of, which makes the Northern Irishman the obvious choice to wrap up our acca for what should be a superb evening’s golf.
