With our outright bets all lined up for the US Open it’s time to turn our attention to the wide range of ‘speciality’ markets, which Paddy have made available for us, starting with a look at the First Round Leader.
With the weather forecast not showing much advantage for either wave I’ll hedge my bets and take one from the AM and one from the PM starters, starting with Ryan Fox who tees off at 8.13am local time.
Fox has really started to find his feet on the PGA Tour of late with two top tens in his past four starts, including a seventh place last time out in Canada. A past winner of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship the New Zealander has long been known as a good exponent of links style tests so he should enjoy the challenges of Pinehurst particularly with its Australian sand belt type feel.
Long off the tee and a possessor of a good putting touch Fox certainly has the attributes to perform well here.
Whether the 37-year-old has the game to win a Major is debatable, however I am keen to side with him in some manner and having started well in his most recent two events, taking him to get out of the blocks quickly looks like the best way to be on board.
Adam Scott
I will continue with the antipodean theme and take a chance on Adam Scott who tees off at 1.58pm local time.
Another who should certainly feel an affinity to the course compared to what he experiences back home, the Aussie’s presence was in doubt this week after he lost out in a play off in final qualifying last week. At 61st though in the world rankings, Scott has made it in to the field as an alternate and thus his streak of consecutive Major Championship appearances continues to 92.
The 43-year-old had a much needed week off, however he wasn’t idle and he arrived on site on Saturday to get plenty of prep work in.
Ninth here in 2014, Scott can also boast plenty of strong links form. Add that to his Green Jacket and we know that greens with run off areas hold no fear to him whatsoever.
Using his long putter to great effect, I expect Scott to perform well here and I’ll take him to get out of the blocks quickly.
Top European Player:
Tommy Fleetwood
Moving on and I’ll take Tommy Fleetwood to bag Top European honours. There has been a lot of talk that Pinehurst’s anticipated firm, fast, conditions and run off areas will favour players with good links skills. It is no surprise that the Englishman’s name is on many shortlists.
With plenty of near misses to his name in Major Championships it is debatable how much we can trust Fleetwood at the business end of the tournament. However, it would be no surprise to see him high on the leaderboard come Sunday.
With Rory McIlroy’s penchant to make mistakes, Viktor Hovland’s short game still a concern and Jon Rahm withdrawing with a foot injury, this looks a great opportunity for the consistency of Fleetwood to shine particularly with three places on offer.
Top USA Player:
Dustin Johnson
Scottie Scheffler is of course an overwhelming favourite, however with only two American’s featuring in our outright team, I do feel there is scope to get involved each-way with Dustin Johnson.
It’s been a pretty slow 2024 for Johnson so far and he looked all at sea at Augusta when missing the cut. After starting sluggishly at Valhalla though he bounced back well over the next three days before finishing 43rd, meanwhile a solid 13th place at LIV Houston last week offers further encouragement.
Always strong in links style conditions, DJ was fourth back in 2014 and as a native of the Carolina’s, he should be fired up to produce the goods this week.
Top 40 Finish:
Webb Simpson
Finally I will take a chance that Webb Simpson can ride the wave of home support to a Top 40 Finish.
A former US Open Champion, Simpson’s best years now seem behind him, however he was desperate to tee it up here this week in his home state and made it through final qualifying to do so.
He’s on record as stating how much he loves Pinehurst No 2, Simpson also boasts a fantastic record on Ross’ nearby Sedgefield CC host of the Wyndham Championship. I expect him to play solidly this week.
