It’s been a week at Valhalla, which will sadly be overshadowed by the death of a tournament security guard on Friday morning in a tragic accident. This event then set off a chain of circumstances, which lead to world number one Scottie Scheffler being arrested by local police in an unrelated incident. Not something any of us thought we would ever see I’m sure.

On Saturday though the golf once more took centre stage and a scintillating third round has left us with two tied at the top on a jam packed leaderboard, which sees 15 players within five shots.

Top of the pile are Xander Schauffele and Collin Morikawa on 15- under. Schauffele who opened with a 62 leads the field in Driving Accuracy and ranks seventh off the tee and fifth in approach. On Saturday though he started to show some signs of nerves with his customary weekend frailty with the putter rearing its head. That said he rallied superbly to birdie his final two holes after a double bogey on 15 threatened to derail his challenge.

Morikawa meanwhile has produced his typically strong tee to green major performance, while also leading the field around the greens for the week.

Behind this duo we have Sahith Theegala who will start one back. Starting two back we then have Viktor Hovland, Bryson Dechambeau and Shane Lowry, with the latter having a putt for the first ever Major 61 on Saturday. Meanwhile the names on 12-,11- and 10- under include Justin Rose, Robert McIntyre, Tony Finau and Justin Thomas.

With so many big names in the hunt and with the course yielding plenty of low numbers trying to pick the winner here is a tall order. Of the front two I’d favour Morikawa who has ‘been there seen it and done it’ at this level. Schauffele meanwhile has struggled time and again this position. He wilted last Sunday in the company of McIlroy and was hunted down by Scheffler at Sawgrass earlier this year. This may finally be his time but I wouldn’t want to trust him today at short odds.

Instead then with three each way places still on offer I will have a small speculative play on Justin Thomas at juicy odds. The home town hero has revelled in the spotlight this week and having won the second of his PGA Championships starting seven back on Sunday he will know a five shot deficit is not insurmountable. Thomas has plenty of history of winning from behind on Sunday with a low one and I’ll take a small risk here he can produce something special today.

Justin Rose v Robert McIntyre – Rose to Win

Looking now at today’s two ball pairings and the first one to catch my eye is Justin Rose who tees off at 2.05pm local time alongside Robert McIntyre.

Both men have flourished on the greens this week with the Englishman ranking third with the flatstick while the Scot ranks sixth. In addition though McIntyre has performed strongly around the greens which has rescued his patchy approach work, conversely Rose has been his normal solid self with the irons and as the course dry’s out more I expect this, along with his far greater experience in this situation, to give him the edge today.

Viktor Hovland v Bryson Dechambeau – Hovland to Win

Next up I will take Viktor Hovland versus Bryson Dechambeau at odds against when they tee off at 2.15pm local Time.

Dechambeau’s length has been a great advantage to him this week, however his approach play has let him down at times and he currently sits outside the top 40 in this area. Hovland meanwhile is showing immediate benefit from returning to his long time coach and his iron play has looked particularly sharp. Granted there is not much to choose between this duo but Hovland as the outsider has to get the nod.

Sahith Theegala v Shane Lowry – Theegala to Win

Finally I will finish our treble by taking Sahith Theegala to see off Shane Lowry when they tee off at 2.25pm local time.

While Theegala certainly has the look of a Major winner of the future I will admit there is a risk here that this is too soon in his career for him and he falters under the spotlight today.

That said I feel Lowry has to opposed today. The Irishman has struggled on the greens this year, however yesterday everything fell for him on the way to his 62 and he leads the field for the week on the dance floor. We have seen time and again over the years players struggle to follow up a really low round and I can see that being the case today.

It may be then that Theegala does not need to produce anything too spectacular to land the bet and he certainly looks the play here.
