Golf Tips: A 25/1 play for this week’s Major action in the PGA Championship

Golfing guru Martin Mathews fancies Brooks Koepka to shine at Valhalla and he's also keeping Max Homa onside as an each-way play too.

The second Major of the year, the PGA Championship at Valhalla GC, in Louisville, Kentucky tees off on Thursday and was last used in 2014 when Rory McIlroy landed the most recent of his four Major titles.

A par 71 measuring just over 7600 yards it was designed by Jack Nicklaus and is a classical test featuring undulating, wider-than-average tree lined fairways. Like many Nicklaus designs, this looks set to be ‘second shot’ golf course, which gets tougher the nearer you get to the hole.

I expect distance off the tee to be key.

The world number one, Scottie Scheffler, arrives here looking for his third straight victory and his fourth in five starts. He’s head and shoulders above the chasing pack at the moment, under normal circumstances you would struggle to see anyone stopping Scheffler. However, having just welcomed his first child, Scheffler could well come in distracted. It’s this unknown that makes him easy to pass at the odds.

If Scheffler is understandably not on his ‘A’ game, the man to take advantage is Rory McIlroy. Having romped to victory at Quail Hollow at the weekend he seems to have peaked at exactly the right time as he aims to win at this venue for the second time. Ultimately though I can’t ignore that 10 year winless Major streak. With his odds now comparable to those in last week’s weaker field, I’ll pass.

With Jon Rahm still searching for a spark since joining LIV and Ludvig Aberg withdrawing from the Wells Fargo with a knee problem, I’ll start our team with the man who has won five Majors since Rory last bagged one, Brooks Koepka.

Brooks Koepka

Brooks Koepka

Three things seem certain in life – namely death, taxes and that Koepka will find form just as the PGA Championship comes around.

Last year in his three starts prior to the PGA Championship, Koepka posted a win and two top six finishes to go with his runner-up finish at Augusta before he landed the Wanamaker Trophy for the third time.

This year having talked post Masters about being embarrassed by his performance, he has finished 10th in LIV Adelaide and went on to win in Singapore.

Koepka notched the first of his three PGA Championship wins at Bellerive CC in St Louis on a track that boasts very similar characteristics. This week looks an ideal opportunity for the Major Championship specialist to pounce once more.

Max Homa

It is often said that the key to finding the winner of a Major is to look at those who have performed well in the most recent ones. The name that leaps off the page is Max Homa.

A six-time Tour winner, Homa historically struggled to be a factor in the Majors. At Hoylake last year though the Californian finally landed his first Major top 10 and with him backing this up with a third place finish at Augusta, he has clearly found the missing ingredient to compete on the biggest of stages.

Eighth at Quail Hollow was the perfect warm up and I expect a big showing from him now.

Min Woo Lee

In a team, which focuses on bigger hitters I ‘ll also add Min Woo Lee. The Australian played nicely last time out at the Byron Nelson and produced his best effort this year, a runner up finish at Nicklaus’ PGA National. A player who flourishes on the big stage – I’m keen to have him on side.

Byeong Hun An

The big-hitting An has performed strongly over the years on Nicklaus layouts so there is clearly something he likes about the way the ‘Golden Bear’s’ courses are set up.

Currently sixth in the Fedex Cup standings, the Korean is enjoying a stellar 2024 and coming in off a third place at Quail Hollow he looks a perfect fit to go well.

Taylor Pendrith

I can’t ignore Taylor Pendrith in this event where Paddy Power are paying to 10 places.

Pendrith landed his first PGA Tour title at the Byron Nelson a couple of weeks ago and rode that crest of this wave in to tenth place at Quail Hollow last week. He’s currently ninth on tour in ‘Driving Distance’ stats, Pendrith has a history of riding hot form in streaks and he just might be able to produce a shock at big odds.
