Golf fans are already looking ahead to another year of exciting major championships in 2024, and Paddy Power News has put together a guide of everything you need to know.
The four major championships on the calendar are the pinnacle of professional golf, bringing together the world’s best players from all of the big tours.
They define the narrative of each season and each offers their own unique challenges. Both the PGA Tour and DP World Tour seasons have already got underway and the controversial Saudi Arabia-backed LIV Golf schedule begins next week.
As for majors, the first takes place in April. You can run the rule over the latest golf odds on the Paddy Power website and Paddy Power app.
The Masters
When: April 11 – 14
Venue: Augusta National Golf Club, Georgia, USA
2023 Prize Money: $18 million
Perhaps the most prestigious major event of the year, The Masters is a tradition like no other. Held annually at Augusta National, it’s the first major of the year.
Winning at Augusta is no mean feat, with the course being the ultimate test of skill and pressure. The iconic green jacket awaits every champion with the winner guaranteed a place in the field for the rest of their life.
Current champion Jon Rahm joined LIV Golf back in December signing a rumoured £450m deal. He will try and defend his crown in April, but only three players have ever won the competition consecutively.
Scottie Scheffler is Paddy Power’s current favourite for the first major of the year.
The PGA Championship
When: May 16-19
Venue: Valhalla GC, Louisville, Kentucky, USA
2023 Prize Money: $17.5 million
The PGA Championship is the second major of the year, held annually on a variety of courses across the USA. The event itself has had several changes since its creation and since 2019 has been played in May.
Last year’s champion Brooks Koepka became the first LIV Golf player to win a major and only the third golfer ever with more than two PGA Championship titles.
Rory McIlroy is the current favourite for the PGA a tournament he has won twice in 2012 and 2014.
The US Open
When: June 13-16
Venue: Pinehurst Resort & Country Club (Course No.2), North Carolina, USA
2023 Prize Money: $20 million
The US Open offers a huge test for the best golfers with its difficult courses that are often really mentally and physically tough. As of last year, it offers the largest purse of all the four majors and winners are often from the USA.
Last year, American Wyndham Clarke won the event in what was just his seventh career major start, beating former champions Rory Mcllroy by one stroke.
Scottie Scheffler won the US Open in 2022 and is Paddy Power’s current favourite for this year’s edition.
The Open Championship
When: July 18-21
Venue: Royal Troon, Ayrshire, Scotland
2023 Prize Money: $16.5 million
The oldest major in golf, simply referred to as The Open is held every year on a different links golf course in the UK.
The unique conditions and deep bunkers of links golf offer a different test and this year players will fight it out at Royal Troon for the famous Claret Jug.
Defending the title is Brian Harman, who won his first-ever major last year at Royal Liverpool becoming only the fifth left-handed major golf champion ever.
Rory McIlroy is the favourite to win The Open for the first time since 2014.
