If you’re new to golf then you’ll probably spend the whole Ryder Cup weekend baffled by some of the terminology on show.
What on earth is a four-ball? What does a foursome mean in the context of golf? There’s no need to panic, we’ve got you covered with all you need to know ahead of the three days of action at the Marco Simone Golf & Country Club near Rome, Italy from Friday, September 29 to Sunday, October 1.
Friday and Saturday comprise four four-ball matches and four foursomes matches per day before 12 singles matches on Sunday to settle proceedings with a bang.
All the different formats in the Ryder Cup are scored using the match-play system, whereby the aim is to win a hole by completing it in the fewest shots. If a team or player wins more holes than are left to be played then the match is settled.

What is a four-ball in Ryder Cup golf?
Europe and the USA nominate two players per team and all four play their own ball. The lowest score per hole on each team is counted and the team with the lower score wins the hole. If the scores are level then the hole is tied.
What is a foursome in Ryder Cup golf?
There is just one ball per two-man team in a foursome match as the players take alternate shots until the hole is completed. One player per team will tee off on the odd-numbered holes while the other will tee off on the even-numbered holes. The team with the lowest score win the hole and it is tied if the scores are level.
What is a singles match in Ryder Cup golf?
The most simple of the three formats as a singles match features one player from each team and the lower score wins the hole.
