The Ryder Cup is one of the biggest sporting events on the calendar so there’s plenty of cash on the line, right?
Wrong. It turns out the world’s best golfers are pretty much scrapping it out for glory instead of money on the fairways and greens at the Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in Rome, Italy later this month.
Team Europe’s 12 stars officially don’t bank a penny for the exploits in the three-day competition, although they traditionally receive a gift from their captain paid for from the Ryder Cup pool.
The Americans have a slightly different way of doing things. The PGA of America awards around $200,000 to each of their 12 golfers, with the money being split between various charities, good causes and golfing initiatives.
The captains in 2023 – Luke Donald and Zach Johnson – are also effectively unpaid with travel expenses being their financial benefit. However, the exposure of the role means they could boost their bank balances further down the line through appearances, opportunities and sponsorship deals.
With plenty of fans paying big bucks to be in attendance and the global television deals, the Ryder Cup turns a healthy profit. When the event is held on the other side of the pond, the PGA of American takes around 80% of the profits while the European Tour slices off 60% of the profits when it takes place in Europe.
