John Deere Classic tips
Denny McCarthy to Win
Eric Cole (each way)
Adam Schenk (each way)
Sam Ryder (each way)
After last week’s Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit, the PGA Tour contingent stays in the Midwest, with action coming from rural Silvis, Illinois, which will play host to the John Deere Classic. Many of the world’s best have their eyes solely fixed on preparations for the 151st Open Championship in a fortnight, meaning this week’s field lacks some star power. Still, there is plenty of talent on show looking to take advantage of the absence of golf’s elite.

The 7,289 yard par-71 course is one of the most straightforward challenges of the season. Low scores have forever been the norm around TPC Deere Run, and I’d expect the trend to continue this week. With distance not being an issue around this track, success will come down to those who flourish on the greens with the flat stick.
Denny McCarthy to Win
Denny McCarthy comes in this week as one of the tournament favourites and he’s fully deserving of it. In his last three starts, Denny has finished runner-up at the Memorial, T-20 at the US Open, and T-7th at the Travelers. Along with playing some of his best golf of his career, McCarthy had a very respectable showing at this tournament last year, finishing T-6th. With the course suiting those who putt well, nobody on Tour holds more respect than Denny on the greens. Expect him to be in contention Sunday.
Eric Cole (each way)
Eric Cole has settled in very nicely into his first year on Tour and is the hot favourite for rookie of the year. His form in the last three months has been incredibly impressive making eight out of his last ten cuts. He finally took a break from the Tour last week to play a charity event in Pittsburgh, in which he won by nine shots and shot a course record in the process. Cole ranks 2nd overall in putting average on Tour, and it should play into his hands here. A maiden win could be on the cards for the rookie this week.
Adam Schenk (each way)
A combination of excellent recent form and course history makes Adam Schenk a must-pick this week. With four top ten’s this year, including two second-placed finishes, it’s been a very impressive 2023 so far for Schenk. He also boasts T-4th and T-6th finishes here in 2021 and 2019 respectively. In a course that requires birdies, Schenk ranks 11th on Tour for birdies made this year. His impressive T-7th finish at the Rocket Mortgage last week has the mid-west native primed for a good week here at TPC Deere Run.
Sam Ryder (each way)
A longshot pick of note this week is 33-year-old Sam Ryder. Sam has made the weekend’s action on each occasion of playing this tournament, with his best finish T-2nd in 2018. Ryder has averaged 68.38 strokes per round at TPC Deere Run. He also ranks third in putting strokes gained on Tour, and as I’ve mentioned, this is a necessary tool to be successful here this week. An each-way bet looks very appealing here if you’re looking for an outsider.
