The US Open has been a bit of a slow burner, with the lack of wind and overcast conditions leading to a far more ‘getable’ course in the early part of the week.
Since Rickie Fowler and Xander Schauffele both set new US Open scoring records with their day one 62s, the course has gradually toughened up. Those who are happy to burn the midnight oil tonight look set to witness a fantastic final round, helped by third-placed Rory McIlroy chasing his first Major in nine years.
With the last 24 US Open winners all starting Sunday within four shots of the lead, history tells us that these four players, along with Harris English who starts at -6 have the event in their hands.

I will swerve the outright market though and instead focus on today’s two ball pairings for an acca starting by siding with Matt Fitzpatrick when he tees off at 8.57pm UK time against Collin Morikawa. Both men are former winners of this, however as defending champion Fitzpatrick will be looking to sign off the week in style.
The Englishman was really solid on Saturday making four birdies to offset two bogeys and ranking 13th in approach play. Morikawa conversely had an up and down day and had to call on a hot putter, ranking fourth on the greens to limit the damage. Fitzpatrick has been in far more solid form than his counterpart, who also arrived nursing a back injury. Last year’s champion looks good value to come out on top.
I fancy Bryson Dechambeau against Tom Kim when they head out 9.49pm UK time. Kim produced a scintillating front nine, 29, yesterday before cooling off somewhat down the stretch and posting 66. He may struggle to match those heroics today, particularly as he led the field on the greens on Saturday, normally his weak spot.
Dechambeau really seems to have turned a corner of late. Fourth at last month’s PGA – you can see his confidence returning. I expect him to make his far greater experience in this arena count today.
Dustin Johnson tees off at 10.08pm UK time against Harris English and it’s Johnson who appeals. Johnson made the dreaded ‘snowman’ (an eight) early in Friday’s second round, however he showed plenty of grit to bounce back and hang tough. English conversely fell away poorly on the back nine on Saturday with four bogeys in his last eight holes.
We last saw English in the hunt at Colonial a few weeks back but was really poor on the Sunday shooting a 76. Having struggled the way he did in the latter stages yesterday it would be no surprise to see something similar again. Anything around level par from Johnson may well be good enough.
I will finish off our acca by taking Rickie Fowler against Wyndham Clark in the final pairing at 10.30pm UK time.
Fowler may just come up short to win it but is clearly getting back to his best. He has a vast bank of Major experience to call on, which I expect to stand him in good stead. Clark is a player on the up but this is completely uncharted waters for him and this experince is part of his learning curve.
