In what was supposed to be a warm up tournament for the US Open next week, the huge news of the merger between the LIV, PGA and DP Tours on Tuesday has brought a real buzz to the RBC Canadian Open. With there being no shortage of coverage of the ongoings off the course, let’s preview the action this weekend inside the ropes.

The course at Oakdale Golf Club near Toronto will host this event for the first time. A few notable characteristics about this 7264-yard par 72, would be its undulating fairways and thick bluegrass rough which would play to the advantage of the straight accurate ball strikers. Add in the small tiered greens surrounded by bunkers, the ability to scramble well will be the difference in being competitive this weekend.

Matt Fitzpatrick To Win

The 2022 US Open champion has emerged as one of the most consistent and talented players on tour. This year the Englishman has four top-ten finishes along with a victory at the RBC Heritage in April. The course suits a good ball striker and Matt Fitzpatrick is one of the best. His elite scrambling game too will be beneficial around Oakdale with no lack of bunkers around the small greens.

Accuracy is key here and Fitz has the game and the track record. Having finished in the top ten here in 2022 and going on to win his first major the week after you’d have to feel that he will feel comfortable in Toronto this week which could spell trouble for the rest of the field.

Justin Rose (each-way)

Justin Rose has had a very impressive year so far and the results speak for themselves: seven top-20 finishes, highlighted by his win at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. The 42-year-old has made each one of his last six cuts and aims to continue that trend this week.

Rose had an incredible final round at this event last year finishing on Sunday with a round of 60 to finish in fourth place. Like his fellow countryman, Rose’s ball striking and scrambling is world class, and the course should suit. I’d expect to see the Englishman in contention on Sunday.

Matt Kuchar (each-way)

Matt Kuchar, just like Rose, has seen a return to some of his best golf this year. Last Sunday’s final round at the Memorial Tournament was something that Kuchar will look to put to the back of his mind and no better place than at a tournament he flourishes at. Kuchar has finished in the top twenty in the last five Canadian Opens.

One of the best scramblers on Tour, Kuchar ranks first in sand saves and second in shots gained around the green. The Oakdale course will play into his hands. The 44-year-old looks good each-way value here.

Taylor Pendrith (each-way)

For anyone looking for a good longshot this week, Taylor Pendrith catches the eye. The Canadian will have the advantage of home support this week but he’s well able to play. He’s very consistent with the putter and his approach game is very impressive. Pendrith ranks second on Tour with approaches from between 175-200 yards.

He had an impressive showing at the PGA Championship with a top-thirty finish, so he has some form. If you fancy a home underdog Taylor could be your man.
