Spring is in the air, Easter is upon us and in terms of the golfing calendar that can only mean one thing, it is time for the first Major of the year, The Masters at Augusta.

A par 72 measuring this year to 7545 yards the key to success at Augusta is two-fold. Firstly, take advantage of the four Par fives and secondly find the right spots on the greens with your approach play. Find the wrong level on the lightning fast greens and it is nigh on impossible to get down in two.

As always the anticipation leading in to the week is huge however this year we have a new dynamic in play as 18 LIV Golf rebels roll in to town looking to show that their defection to the new circuit has not blunted their competitive edge.

So, let’s take a look at some of the leading contenders starting with the ‘big three’, Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm who head the market all at single figure odds.

World number one Scheffler is looking to be only the third player in over 50 years to retain the Green Jacket and the first since Tiger Woods in 2002, so the odds are stacked against the Texan, however, as a player who seems fazed by very little and with his form all but as strong as when he arrived here last year you would be a brave man to bet against him.

Equally though in McIlroy and Rahm you have two players who have nearly as much going for them. McIlroy who has a win and two further top three finishes this year boasts a CV of seven top tens in his past nine visits to Augusta. Rahm meanwhile who notched three wins in his first five starts of the year, has also posted four top tens in his last five starts here.

Jordan Spieth

With so little to choose between the big three, I will shy away from them all and instead, in an event Paddy are paying to ten each-way places, I will take my chances at bigger odds a little further down the board starting with Jordan Spieth.

Spieth’s record at Augusta is superb, boasting one win and four other top three finishes in nine visits with the only times he has struggled relatively here being when he was out of form coming in.

This year though while yet to post a win in 2023 he arrives in great shape on the back of three top six finishes of late including a near miss at the Valspar a couple of weeks ago.

Ranked tenth in approach play that week we know the all important iron play for here is working well, while you would hope the putter, which can occasionally mis-fire will co-operate on greens he knows as well as anyone.

Spieth’s credentials look rook solid and with the ‘big three’ holding up his price I am happy to lead with him.

Xander Schauffele

Next up I will nail my colours to the mast with Xander Schauffele.

Having knocked on the door so regularly in Majors over recent years last year was actually quieter for Schauffele on this front as he missed the cut here while posting solid but unspectacular top 20s in the other three.

Having found the winning knack again away from the Majors though the Californian now returns to Augusta where he has two previous top three finishes. Ranked eighth for the season in approach play and having played nicely at the Matchplay last time out he may just be peaking at the right time.

Sungjae Im

Next up for me is Sungjae Im. Like Schauffele, it hasn’t all quite clicked yet for Im this year, however, three top six finishes in his last seven starts show he is not far away. Another who boasts a great Augusta record with a second and an eighth in three visits there is plenty to like about him at the odds.

Justin Rose

Finally I shall round things off with a pair of Englishmen, Justin Rose and Danny Willett.

Rose returned to the winners circle earlier this year closing out the title in fine style at Pebble Beach to show he still has what it takes when it matters on a Sunday and with his superb record at Augusta he should be brimming with confidence coming in to the week.

Danny Willett

Willett meanwhile is quietly putting together a really solid 2023 on the PGA Tour and as a player who makes a habit of bagging big titles he could go really well at big odds with a second Green Jacket not beyond him.
