After last week’s WGC Matchplay in Austin, the PGA Tour contingent stays in the Lone Star State this week making the short trip down Interstate 35 to where TPC San Antonio will play host to the Valero Texas Open.

For the vast majority of the field, this competition poses the final opportunity to seal themselves a chance to hit the fairways of Augusta so the extra motivation for a positive showing here will be shown amongst all entrants in this week’s field.

Some of the course factors to take into consideration for this event are the tree-lined fairways and the windy conditions. It’s essential to have a good approach game as well as being accurate off the tee to give yourself a chance. Now let’s get into some of the names to look out for this weekend.

Rickie Fowler

The Oklahoma State man has seen a major re-emergence in form in recent months. A change of caddy along with a move to working alongside Butch Harmon has seen Rickie move up over 100 spots in the world rankings. With no place secured yet in Augusta expect a big tournament from Fowler.

He’s carrying some really good form with him too, having finished in the top-twenty in five of his last six events while also having a very positive showing at the WGC Matchplay. Expect to see that iconic orange outfit on your TV screen come Sunday evening.

Matt Kuchar

Another man who has very good recent form is Matt Kuchar. Kuch went three for three in the WGC group stages only to be beaten by Jason Day on the 18th despite being two under for the day.

He can also call upon course form this week, having two top-five finishes around these parts even finishing runner-up to last year’s winner JJ Spaun. It’s about time we heard those Kuch chants around the greens of the PGA Tour again.

Chris Kirk

Kirk has already tasted victory on tour this year with his victory at the Honda Classic. The Tennessee native also has course form boasting three top-ten finishes in San Antonio.

As mentioned, good approach play is essential for success here and there’s been none better than Kirk on Tour this year ranking first in approaches from 125 – 150 yards. This will be a huge advantage around the Oaks Course and play right into his hands.

Kevin Chappell

A previous winner of this event, Chappell has some value here.. He also has a nice little bit of form coming into the event finishing in the top thirty in his last three events. He’s played eighteen rounds here in San Antonio averaging nearly two under par. He knows his way around these parts. A small each-way bet could appeal to those who like to look for a bit of value.
