Golf Tips: A 21/1 two-ball acca for the Players Championship finale

There maybe some juice in Tommy Fleetwood’s slim hopes of catching Scottie Scheffler at Sawgrass but this two-ball acca can take us down the stretch.

Patrick Cantlay v Rickie Fowler – Ricky Fowler
Justin Rose v Taylor Montgomery – Justin Rose

We’ve reached the 54 hole stage of this year’s Players Championship and it is a familiar name, Scottie Scheffler, that sits at the top of the leaderboard on 14 under par with a two shot lead heading into Sunday over Min Woo Lee.

As those who read my pre-event preview will know, based on his lack of course form here I was pretty cool on Scheffler’s chances, however the Texan took advantage of a good break with a weather delay, which allowed him to finish off his second round in calm, soft conditions on Saturday morning, and he then pushed on with a fine 65 on Saturday afternoon to open up his lead.

Scheffler has been superb from tee to green this week and all logic dictates he now closes this out with ease, something reflected in his short odds on price this morning.

As we know though, golf is a strange game and having seen Scheffler wobble at last year’s Tour Championship on Sunday, it may just be that he makes heavy weather of things in anticipated tougher conditions today.

Min Woo Lee undoubtedly has a huge future in the game, however this is uncharted waters for him in an event of this magnitude and the one I am therefore going to take Scheffler on with is Tommy Fleetwood who starts in fourth place and five back on 9 under.

The Englishman caught fire in his second round and is now 13 under for his last 29 holes on the course. With winds forecast to gust at 20mph+ this afternoon this could play right into the Southport man’s hands and it may just be if those ahead of him struggle in these conditions he does not need to go too low here to triumph. Having paid his dues here over the years he can apply some pressure and make his Sawgrass experience count.

We are, of course, relying on some help from Scheffler which is obviously not a given but we do have the each-way safety net of second place available with Paddy, which I certainly feel is up for grabs.

Moving on to today’s two balls and the first pairing to catch my eye is that of Patrick Cantlay and Rickie Fowler who tee off at 17.35 UK time and it is the resurgent Fowler who I will take a chance with here at good odds against.

This pair have matched each other’s scores over the first three rounds this week and as the far higher ranked player it makes sense that Cantlay is a solid favourite to get the better of his playing partner today. A former champion here though, Fowler is far more experienced on the course and as someone renowned as a strong wind player the anticipated conditions should play into his hands.

Continuing my theme of taking experience to count on what looks like a tough day and I will side with Justin Rose over Taylor Montgomery when they tee off at 17.55pm UK time.

After a great start to the season, Montgomery has cooled off slightly in recent weeks so this performance has come slightly as a surprise. Ultimately, he took advantage yesterday of the uncharacteristically easy conditions and I suspect he could get found out today.

Rose conversely will know exactly what to expect when the wind blows here and having won recently in blustery conditions at Pebble Beach he should be relishing the challenge.

Next up I will take a chance on Christiaan Bezuidenhout to get the better of Im Sung-jae in the 18.15pm pairing.

The South African failed to really push on yesterday however he did remain bogey free and again I expect today’s firmer, windier conditions to be much more to the liking of this former Valderrama champion.

Sung-jae meanwhile found his touch on the greens yesterday to shoot 64. As we know though it is often a struggle to follow up a low round and I’ll take my chances on Bezuidenhout.

Finally, I will complete our acca by siding with Aaron Rai over Chad Ramey when they head out at 18.25.

Rai had a day that will live long in his memory yesterday making a hole-in-one on 17, however away from that let’s not forget he is one of the most accurate players off the tee on tour, something which should stand him in good stead today. Ramey deserves plenty of credit for hanging in there after making a seven on 17 on Friday but Rai looks far more reliable to me and should come out on top here.
