DP World Tour Championship tips

Tommy Fleetwood (NAP)

We are at the Earth Course at the Jumeirah Golf Estates in Dubai for the DP World Tour Championship this week. The key thing here is it will be a good shot per round tougher than AVIV Dubai Championship that took place at the Fire Course last week. That should bring out the best in players like Bernd Wiesberger and my NAP Tommy Fleetwood.

They are clearly brilliant at the tee-to-green players, who can get left behind when things turn into a shootout. Tommy Fleetwood would admit to you himself he hasn’t had a great year. That probably has been tied to his driver. It was his weapon over the past five years as he emerged as a world-class player, but this season it has been very poor. But, if you look at his last six events, his driver has started to get dialled in again.

When Fleetwood has the long game where he needs it, he’s a massive threat to the rest of the field – particular when he plays in the desert. He has won twice over in Abu Dhabi and he has been very close to winning this event in the past – having been runner-up a couple of years ago. He’s not got the distraction of the Race To Dubai, so he could just be the one to follow here.

NEW TO PADDY POWER?

Bernd Wiesberger (Next Best)

Bernd Wiesberger was only beaten by a shot last weekend and that’s despite putting poorly on the Fire Course, as he has done for large parts of the season. If he could just be average on the greens, that’s all we really need from the Austrian. He can go really well at this tournament and he’s been the best ball-striker on the now-former European Tour this season by quite a distance.

He really has an excellent chance over the four days. It’s generally one of the top European players that wins this event every year, and Wiesberger is one of those men now. What a way it would be for him to cap a year, which saw him make his Ryder Cup debut, by winning here.

Big Odds Plays
Victor Perez (Each-Way)

Victor Perez was the first-round leader in this tournament a year ago and he also went really well here on debut in 2019. On both of those occasions he was under a lot of pressure, having been inside the qualification standards for the Ryder Cup. However, things didn’t work out for him in that regard in the end. I don’t believe it’s a coincidence that since the Ryder Cup has finished and he failed to make the team, that he has started to play a bit better and perhaps with a great sense of freedom.

He’s really caught my eye on his last pair of outings, firing 65s in Sunday in Portugal two weeks ago and last week in Dubai. A tougher course definitely suits him and if he can marry all the parts of his game – that all fired separately on different days at events – he’s clearly shown form previously that is good enough to win this event. He is one of the best young players on the Tour and finally, we are getting to see that again.

Robert MacIntyre (Each-Way)

The final one I really like is Robert MacIntyre. He is from a very similar category of player as Perez. He’s good off the tee and very aggressive in his play. He has a disappointing year, it has to be said. I believe when he started it by finishing third in the Dubai Desert Classic, we’d have all expected him to go on to win some events and even challenge to be included in the Ryder Cup team.

However, I reckon he’s got a really good reason to finish the season off on a high. That’s because he has got a great record at the Earth course, where he has played twice and had a chance on one of those occasions. He was only a shot behind going into the final round last year. There was just enough from him last week – albeit on an easy course – to suggest his game is getting there. MacIntyre could give us a good run for our money over the four days.
