Matthias Schwab is a very accurate player and accuracy is the aim of the game at Valderrama. He doesn’t overpower golf courses and he plays smart and sticks to fairways. Everyone’s going to miss the greens as they’re tiny so you need a good short game. Schwab has all the attributes needed to succeed here.
Aaron Rai is a two-time European Tour winner and he’s a very similar player to Schwab in terms of the accuracy in his game. He also has a top-10 finish at the course which is always helpful. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Rai shine.
Alexander Bjork has had a couple of tries here and he hasn’t done much but I’m convinced it’s a good golf course for him. This is a short course and Bjork can compete at this level. It’s like old-school golf. He’s got form in Hong Kong and Switzerland and if he can improve on the greens he’s got a really good chance. He’s off the radar and he’s a massive price.
Scottie Scheffler beat John Rahm in the singles at the Ryder Cup and that was a coming of age moment for him. He had a run out last week and in the second round he made nine birdies. Big hitting and birdie making is his game down to a tee.
Louis Oosthuizen is a bit frustrating and he has a habit of getting beaten, as we saw in the US PGA. He deserves to get over the line and this might be his chance. Some of those at the top of the market might just be caught cold. Oosthuizen played last week and finished 14th. If he can hole a few more he’s got a good chance.
Cameron Davis is a young Australian who won this summer in a low-scoring event. He’s played quite well despite not having his long game sorted. That started to turn around last week and that could be the key. Anyone who played last week at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open just five miles down the road will have an advantage so hopefully that works in Davis’ favour.
Hudson Swafford is a little out of form but he’s a huge price. Swafford loves playing on Tom Fazio-designed courses so The Summit Club fits the bill. He’s a big hitter and he can play well in the desert. He’s worth keeping an eye on.
