The Ryder Cup, one of the most anticipated sporting events of the year, is almost upon us and the two teams are starting to take shape.
Who’ll drive their way into contention for a place on Team Europe? Who’ll make the cut for Team USA? With the three-day extravaganza less than a month away, time is running out for the world’s top golfers to press home their claims.
The Ryder Cup 2021 – delayed for 12 months by the coronavirus pandemic – will be held at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin on the other side of the pond. Europe are the defending champions after a comprehensive victory in France almost three years ago.
Paddy’s traders have the latest Ryder Cup odds at paddypower.com/golf/the-ryder-cup-2021 otherwise you’ll find all the information about how the teams are picked and when they’ll be announced below.
Who are the Ryder Cup captains?
Ireland’s very own Padraig Harrington, a three-time Major Championship winner, captains Team Europe and he’ll be assisted by fellow Irishman Graeme McDowell as well as Robert Karlsson, Luke Donald and Martin Kaymer.
Team USA will be led by former world number two Steve Stricker, with Jim Furyk, Zach Johnson and Davis Love III serving as vice-captains.
How are Team Europe golfers picked?
There are 12 places on Harrington’s team and three potential routes to get there. The top four on the European Tour list make the cut along with the five next best players on the World Tour list while there are three additional captain’s picks.
As it stands, the following nine players are on track to make the team…
European List: Jon Rahm, Tommy Fleetwood, Tyrell Hatton and Rory McIlory World List: Viktor Hovland, Paul Casey, Matt Fitzpatrick, Lee Westwood and Shane Lowry
How are Team USA golfers picked?
USA golfing bigwigs have increased their number of captain’s picks to six, with the other six players qualifying via a Points List comprised of Major and PGA Tour events.
The following six players have all booked their tickets via the qualification route…
Team USA: Collin Morikawa, Dustin Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, Justin Thomas and Patrick Cantlay
When are the Ryder Cup teams announced?
The full teams will be announced after the BMW PGA Championship, which takes place at Wentworth Club and is scheduled to finish on Sunday September 12. Plenty of golfers on either side of the Atlantic will be nervously waiting by the phone to hear if they’ll need to pack their bags for Wisconsin.
What are the latest Ryder Cup odds?
Team USA are the favourites with Paddy Power to reclaim the Ryder Cup from Team Europe. It’s fair to say home advantage has been a significant factor in recent editions, with the hosts winning on five of the last six occasions.
